Question about Who recorded What on Which Mic

There's some pretty good information in these articles: http://mixonline.com/classic-tracks/index.html Sometimes they get into detail about the mics and sometimes they don't, but they are all interesting to read. .... and it is eye opening how many of the sessions DO use an SM57 on at least...

    Rnp

I took a look at the MOTU 8 Pre and all I can see is that the preamps let you choose a mic or an instrument level. I don't see any mention of line level. The RNP outputs a +4 line level, so that's what you want to have your interface set to. I did a shootout session today with my RNP into the...

    Preamp question

+1 We all buy more gear because we hear the ideal sounds of the pro recordings that we grew up with in our heads and we think we can match that. The truth is unless you have a pro sounding room and the seasoned ears of an engineer, the additional gear is just not going to deliver the sonic...

Should I make the shift to pro-tools?

I love Pro Tools, but if what you have is working for you now, I agree that you should stay the course with Cubase. In addition to the money you would spend, you would be burning time learning the ins and outs of the DAW. Sonically, there is probably no difference at all (to our ears anyway)...

    stinky...

and there'll still be plenty of hatin' on the Behringer threads 2 years from now. Fortunately, my ADA8000 that worked 2 years ago still works today and I bet it will still work 2 years from now when this thread gets resurrected again..... bilco

    opinions on hardware interfaces

I just gave a Digi001 to the steel player in our band, but if I were you, I would hang onto it. Even though the software can not go any higher than PT LE 6.4, it is a rock solid stable combination. Firewire is much better than USB for latency, but nothing is better than PCI. The Black Lion...

    Should I get a pre-amp?

Take it from someone who has been down this road. At the end of the day, even if you sing into a U47 running through an API, your voice is STILL going to sound like YOUR voice. Save yourself the hours and money spent that I went through and just concentrate on getting better with what you...

Looking for compression to use with GT Bricks

The thread stopped in April of 2007, so you may need to do a little browsing to see if you can find anything newer than this. Here is the start of the thread that I was talking about: http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/mv/msg/11962/0/0/6837/ It goes on for 5 pages and the bottom line...

Looking for compression to use with GT Bricks

Unless there is a workaround, I am pretty sure there was a problem with the RNC playing nice with the Brick. It was only a problem at certain gain levels on the Brick, but it was a problem. I think there is a thread in Harvey's forum at the PSW site. Check with FMR before you get an RNC. bilco

    SM58 vs. MXL V67

+1 I record in an untreated spare bedroom and in my living room. I had a Rode NT1a for awhile and I have rented and tried AKG414, Shure KSM27 and KSM32, AT 4033 and a SP C1. They ALL picked up traffic noise, dogs barking down the street, the AC unit, fridge and the fan noise from the PC. A...

    SM57 or e609 Silver?

I don't understand all the hatin' on the SM57. I think it sounds great; the very good guitar player in my band thinks it's great. I have not used the e609, so I can't give a comparison, but I can give this link: http://mixonline.com/classic-tracks/ I have read so many negative comments...

    Analog or Digital?

Wish I still had my grandfather's all tube, mono, reel to reel Wollensak, vintage late 50s probably. What a great machine! Nobody likes working on cars anymore; it's not like the good old days when all you had to do was change out the points and condensor and plugs and set the timing under a...

    Analog or Digital?

It DID always think it was 1-1-80!!! How funny....... I loved that machine, wish I still had it. I could not work on that one though or at least not without sweating about it. You had to mess with jumpers on the motherboard to do anything like adding a drive. The hard drive that had been...

    Analog or Digital?

I think the proof of which format is more economic is found in the pro studios and project studios everywhere. If analog were REALLY cheaper, wouldn't the majority of studios still be spinning tape? It's not just the editing capabilities that have convinced studios to go digital. Studios had...

    HD 280 Pros

Well, I will give you the isolation part of it. They are great as far as leakage and I do like the sound of them, but I really don't like mine. Maybe I have a fat head, but more than 20 minutes under these things makes me feel like my head is in a vise. I think my favorite as far as the...

Use on more than one computer

That is correct. Do what I did and find a used Mbox 1 on Craigslist for $150. You can install the same version of software on both of the computers ideally. If you have different versions of the PT LE software, you can still work around it. The Mbox 1 gives you a couple of inputs and the...

Should I get an electric bass?

Find a luthier in your area that works on guitars and uprights. You may be surprised at how little it costs to get that neck fixed. A good luthier, like Stephen Wise in Austin, can make repairs that are incredible. I tuned a guitar every Sunday for 10 years for the pastor of our church before...

Do You Like (Or Hate) Your Voice?

I don't know about the TLM 103, but I don't think an SM81 is a flattering vocal mic. It is more about capturing an uncolored take than an LDC, which would be in the flattering category. I love the SM81 for lots of things, voice just is not one of them. I think you will really like what the...
