that would have been a deal breaker for me, too. (i'll be honest with you, if shipping were $15 me and you would probably be in an ebay bidding war right now :)).
dw is probably the only drum company i can think of that has what i would consider "hype". i have no opinion of them, but i'd rather spend the same wad of cash money on a set of vintage trixons and a used pickup truck.
most (probably all) of the name brand drum companies make excellent lines...
ok. here's my opinion of the blue sparkle bass drum currently on ebay...i believe the drum is a ludwig. i'm basing that on the lugs, the hoops and what appears to be a white painted shell interior (which dates the drum to pre-1970-ish) and not on the fact that the head says "ludwig"...
here's another one. this one is BAD ASS, but i predict big money will be bid on it over the next six days:

don't be afraid of ebay. you can make a huge drum sound good with decent heads and some tuning, provided the drum isn't completely trashed. here's a good one right here (a diamond in the rough). auction ends in one day, price is only $5 currently...
indeed, it'll be very difficult to find a used 28" bass drum. do you know any school music instructors? sometimes schools have music equipment sitting around unused, particularly schools with marching bands (they seem to change their drum equipment and uniforms every few years so they will...
i recently got a dp01fx (which came with an audio technica AT2020 mic and headphones). i've recorded drums, bass, elec & acous. guitar, mandolin and electric piano with varying degrees of success. i have not mixed anything yet, so i don't know what it will sound like on a stereo. i'm just...
those huge drums are probably going to make normal cymbals look like splash cymbals. refinishing will be a nice touch. i see old marching snare drums fairly often (the type that were slung over the drummer's shoulder with a strap), so hopefully you won't have much of a problem finding the big...
you could try attaching floor tom legs/brackets to the 20" drum. you might need some longer than normal floor tom legs, or perhaps you could just get three pieces of rebar, or something, from your local hardware store. i doubt mounting a 20" drum on top of a 28" bass drum in the same way...
most people know cobham from mahavishnu orchestra. he plays on "the inner mounting flame", "birds of fire", "between nothingness and eternity" and "the trinity sessions". start with the first two. his first solo album, "spectrum" is excellent, too.
lots of people have used different sized bass drums over the years (ginger baker is the first one that comes to mind), and continue to do so (joey waronker, stanton moore, etc).
use whatever you think sounds good.
i've got "dig" on my netflix queue, but i'm not familiar with the music of either of those bands. good suggestions so far. here are a few more...
"miles electric: a different kind of blue" - focuses on miles davis' electric period and features his full set from the 1970 isle of wight...
only hearing them will provide the answer. names mean little when it comes to cymbals as they vary from cymbal to cymbal. bring your cymbals when you go to check out cymbals you're thinking of buying.
my cymbal set-up(s):
home kit:
21" Zildjian k custom special dry ride
20" A. Zildjian ride...
i have all zildjians, except for one paiste crash. i've never owned a sabian (actually, i do have one...a destroyed sabian crash that i found in the garbage, but it's basically unusable). on a recent trip to the guitar center to try out ride cymbals i only found two that i considered buying...a...
