    Tsr-8

Sorry in advance if this has been covered before. Is there a noticable difference in sound quality from a 488mkii to a TSR-8? How difficult is it to find tape for this machine?

    Which phaser?

The Phase 90 is way cool! I've got a Smallstone and it can be kind of ratty sounding at times but there is something strangely appealing in that sound.

    Pickup tone comparisons

Whatever you do, hang on to your original Gibson pickups. I swapped out my Gibson Les Paul pickups some years ago for SD's. At the time I was looking for a little more edge. While the SD's are great souding pickups, I wish I still had my original pickups in order to restore my LP to it's...

    Making better connections

I tend to agree. I've used all sorts of cables over the years, including the expensive ones like Monster cables and Planet Waves. I've never really noticed any audible difference in the sound quality unless the cable itself was bad and made a lot of noise.

    Making better connections

I bought some Planet Wave cables a couple of years ago. The effects patch cables work fine, but the guitar cables I have make a lot of noise.

    488mkII heaven

If you can't get it fixed, you can probably pick up another 488mkii off ebay without spending a lot of cash. I got one off ebay a few months ago for less than $150. It's in great condition. Good luck!

Electric Guitar Strings that don't lose their bang (for awhile at least)?

GHS Boomers. But I've always heard that most strings were manufactured by the same company and marketed under different names. Don't know if that's true.

    Direct Inboxes

I've got the Sans Amp Bass Driver DI also. It's got a nice sound. I don't remember exactly what I paid for it, but I think it is in the price range you mentioned.

    Software or Hardware?

You're probably right. BTW, I don't have 50 grand to spend on equipment either. I've just got a lot of stuff I've collected over the years. You know, eating ramen noodles for 2 weeks so that you could get that amp or pedal that you just had to have.

    Software or Hardware?

I have a friend who has the Pod Pro Rack and he likes it. I've got the Pod 2.0, the kidney shaped unit. It's got a lot of different amp models on it and lots of effects. When I've recorded with it, I've found it to be kind of thin sounding even when I use my Les Paul. I don't know how the Podxt...

    Tape distortion

When I was a kid I would run my cheap Silvertone into an 8 track recorder/player. Not a multitrack, but the kind that played 8 track tapes! I would put it in record mode with the pause button engaged. I would then crank the input until the VU meters maxed out. This would create a really ratty...

    Panning on 60's Recordings

Thanks for all the great information. I love the music from this period. I don't know if it is because of the equipment or the performances, but the music has a vibe that I find is missing in much of todays music. BTW, I am a store manager for a national cd retail chain and I am forced to listen...

    Panning on 60's Recordings

I don't know if this is the right forum to ask this question or not, but I've been listening to some old 60's stuff lately(Elvis and the Beatles) and I've noticed that often times the drums are panned hard to one side. Sometimes even the vocals are panned hard to one side. Was this a trend? Or...
