    Cassette tapes - HELP

You might want to experiment with the Dolby to see what you prefer. I've recorded stuff on a couple of different Tascam models, so I'm not familiar with Yamaha's products. I'm satisfied with recording with Dolby. There was too much noise without it. I don't think it did anything udesirable to...

    Cassette tapes - HELP

The higher tape speed will sound better. You will get less tape hiss if you record with Dolby and play back with Dolby.

    need a BIG hammer

Can you hear what you've recorded onto track one? If not, check the track assignment switches. They have to be set to tape for playback and mic/line input for recording. Can you give a little more info?

    WAV or MP3??

You've got it right. The digital revolution is making things more convenient, but it is killing the music.

    old plate reverbs

I guess this means Eddiecat is Walters, huh? I need a scorecard to keep up with the players. I feel like I've just entered the Matrix. How can I be sure BRDTS isn't really Walters having a conversation with himself?

    The BEST EVER Live Recording

Jeff Buckley, Live at Sin-e. I don't think there is too much processing going on there. Just a little reverb on the vocals. It is truly live, mistakes and all. It is a tribute to his amazing talent and willingness to take chances. If you've never heard "Be Your Husband" you should check it out...

    Sony high bias type II

I've used the Sony CD-IT tapes on my 488mkii. I haven't had a problem with them. The Wal-Mart's in my area don't seem to be carrying the Maxell 60 minute tapes anymore. If you have a Coconuts Music in your area, they still stock the Maxell 60's.

Brand new reel to reel decks ?

Did you get all that off ebay? How long did it take you to assemble that collection? That's pretty impressive!

Warning: I bought a piece of crap

A little late in this thread, but I used to have a Zoom Mrs-4. It's got some nice features. But I've got an old Tascam 424 that blows it away in terms of sound quality. Just my opinion.

    More 60's questions

What's up with all the hiss on Hendrix's records? I've heard other recordings from the same period that aren't as noisy. I guess this was pre Dolby NR. It could be that the hiss is coming from Jimi's amp. It's not necessarily a bad thing, in fact it sounds better than a lot of the sterile...

    Tascam 688

I've got a 488mkii which I think is similar to the 688, minus all the midi stuff. I've also got a stand alone cd recorder. I just run the outputs from the 488 like GFM said, into the analog inputs on the cd recorder. Pretty low tech, but it works!

    Magnetic Fields

What is a safe distance to store your tapes or recorder from magnetic fields? Unfortunately, I'm resticted to my bedroom at the moment which is filled with speaker cabinets, television, computer monitor, ect...

    amp wattage

You can put your amp on a chair or get a stand that will tilt and elevate it. That will help disburse the sound a little. I used to run 2 combo amps in stereo in some clubs. That usually worked well for filling the room with the sound.

    amp wattage

You might be surprised at the volume produced by a low wattage tube amp. They can be very loud!

    Resurrecting the Dead

Charles-You might want to ask some of the people on the Analog Only forum. There are some people on that forum that are very knowledgable about tape and may be able to help you.

    Favorite guitarist....feedback

Steve Morse is great. The Edge is one of my favorite players, he has his own unique sound. Has anyone heard of Ian Moore or seen him play live? He is out there kind of flying under the radar. But he is really good.

    Beta 57A from asia???

Mine looks a little different with the grill removed. No yellow band like in your picture. Does yours have Shure stamped into the black plastic when looking at it from above with the grill removed?

How do you guys do it!? mic, line out, or both?

A 57 close mic'd will sound good. You might want to add a little reverb to give it more of a room sound. If you got extra tracks to play with, you can experiment with all the different ways you mentioned in your post. Then you can pick the sound you like best.
