    I don't k nnow anything! HELP....

Reaper is a very good program that allows you to record, mix and adjust sounds in your computer. You can get it on the link posted below, it is shareware and should be paid for if you use it for longer than 30 days. http://www.cockos.com/reaper/ If you are using a home computer, use a PCI...

    quadraverb

I use reverb sparingly, and have a cunning plan. You place the 'verb on a send, then adjust the send and return pots to get the level you need. In this fashion, huge reverbs can become delicate flowers with little effort. Hope this helps!

    RMGI SM911 shedding

I have to disagree with you, Falken. Just take a look at what the ProFools are paying for their "analog suite." For that matter, consider how many compressors are sold that guarantee "warm" sound, or pres that do the same. Basically, these products are admitting that something was lost when...

    RMGI SM911 shedding

Hey, T, you are appreciated. What you're dealing with in RMG is the classic corporate business model, where the actual end user is the LAST concern. I've actually fired off a missive to them asking for a little leeway for smaller retailers, with no acknowledgement whatsoever. They still haven't...

    Who knows Speakers! YaY!

I don't mean to have a big brown smear on my nose, but I've learned more from Harvey here than just about anyone else. There should be a, "Best of Harvey" page somewhere that archives all the good stuff. That said, this is a topic that always needs more dispelling of the myths that abound. In...

    Percussion Levels?

When I record drums with my old needle meters on a teac narrow format, I keep the average at about 0 db, but peaks swing as high as +6. I don't hear any distortion from this, using no NR. Hope that's helpful...

    Anyone knows this guitar ?

    I think that's a Burns Bison, tttt.

NEW OTARI 2, 4 and 8 track recorders!! OTARI steps up production of multitracks!

It strikes me that this development is, regardless of the particular machines being offered, a clear indicator that the "age of digital", is being proven a false claim. The digital folks can no longer state truthfully that their machines are cheaper, that they sound better, or that they are the...

    Replacing frets, DIY.

I'll chime in here as well. A refret is a LOT of very precise work. Just removing the old frets can destroy your board, unless you are very good, very careful, and no-one has used epoxy or cyanoacrylic in the past on your frets. Then you need to find out what the kerf is, and get fretwire that...

    Your top tip!

One thing I don't see addressed here is noise. Before worrying about compression, EQ, or anything else on the electronic side of the mics, figure out how to eliminate every bit of extraneous noise you can. Make sure every connection is clean and tight, every bit of gear in the signal path is...

2" 16 track advice on brands

Much appreciate the info. I am starting to lean toward the Ampex machines, although a good one is hard to find, and MCI is looking better and better as well. I'd really like to find a machine transport that tends towards the mechanical rather than the electronic, due to the concerns above. Such...

where to get a 1kHz line-up oscillator from

Wow. You forgot to tell him about the furshliggener planghammer meter, FV. Can't adjust a Creative Labs product without one. You connect it to your television video output, then wire in the household blender with bananna clips. Then you lick a fork and put it into your power outlet to check for...

2" 16 track advice on brands

Well, first let me thank you both, for your knowledgable and speedy replies. It's really great to know that there are people willing to share hard-won information about these machines so readily. Otto, I never heard too much about the 3M machines, but from what I've read on your other thread...

2" 16 track advice on brands

I really like old gear, for one thing. The smell of old circuit boards warming up does my heart good for some reason, and I'm not afraid to get a soldering iron and schematic out if I have to. A warranty is nice, but the older machines I've owned so far are so well built and fun to use that I...

2" 16 track advice on brands

Searching for information on these is a nightmare here, so I'm going to ask directly. My ambition since teenhood has been to use and own a wide format multitrack tape recorder, and the money is slowly coming together for one. I know I'll be wanting a 2" machine, with 16 track heads, XLR inputs...

Contact RMGI Before It's Too Late

Until we no longer have a "most favored nations", agreement with China, there is going to be an endless supply of manufactured goods streaming in from them. The best way to run a country into the ground is to export raw materials and import manufactured goods, in fact that was the actual reason...

    Strap-On!

Funny you should mention this...for the first ten years I played the thing, I always thought that the "gunfighter" guitar, hanging down as far as I could reach it, was cool. Once I got a few real chops that required dexterity, things like sweep arpeggios and quick jazz chord changes, I found...

Contact RMGI Before It's Too Late

I'm not bent at RMG. Their tape is of high quality, and while it is priced out of line, this doesn't stop me from appreciating their good product. What irritates me is the boneheaded tendency to take the money and run instead of contributing to growing their market, and in the process assuring...

Can someone Explain Phasing problems to me?

Well, you've eliminated a number of causes, yes. From what I understand, even the signal path electronics can come into play, although I've not encountered it.. I'm no phase expert, just a bunch of issues have come up in my stuff that I had to dope out the hard way. One thing to bring up. Phase...

Can someone Explain Phasing problems to me?

It can be very simple, or very complex, depending on what your problem is. I'll give you my uncomplicated explanation here, and you can work from there. A sine wave is the beginning. All alternating signals, like musical tones, can be expressed as a sine wave. It goes, in a certain amount of time...
