    Advice for DAW build

Unless you hunger for the experience of rolling your own PC don't do it. You're far better off and money ahead to pick up a PC on sale and mod it to suit. For example (courtesy of DealNews RSS feed) these recently crossed the wire- ASUS Ivy Bridge i7 Quad PC w/ 16GB RAM for $700 Lenovo C340...

sound devices mix pre d as audio interface

I'm using the Sound Devices USBPre 2 and I'm familiar with the MixPre-D. Either can be used for ENG though powering the USBPre 2 in stand-alone requires a USB power source. The USBPre 2 used to be SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper but I guess Sound Devices clued into the fact that it was eating into their...

    PC vs. Mac (hahaha)

I may go with a Mac Pro (for 4K video manipulation) eventually, but right now the $1,300 that B&H wants for the cheapest four-core 2.7GHz/8GB/1TB iMac buys a careful shopper... A two-core 3.4GHz/4GB/1TB PC compat w/Win 8 ($350 in this example, but I got it for $275 on sale) that my fifteen y.o...

Amature Looking to Expand My Equipment[WARNING: LONG]

I just scored a Lenovo i3 3.4GHz 4GB/1TB Win 8 desktop (no monitor) for $250 and there is NO WAY I could ever build up a computer for that price. The processor costs $130, and Win 8 $100 by themselves. To find those deals get a google.com account, use reader.google.com, and subscribe to...

Everyone who aspires to be more then they are must first and foremost believe in themselves regardless what anyone else thinks. If you're looking to have mediocrity praised you ask your girlfriend.

4/5th of a Macintosh for 1/3rd the price

I'll be stepping back to Win 7 Pro regardless. Yah. Another 4GB stick is only $25 and I'll be dropping a SSD in there in due course.

4/5th of a Macintosh for 1/3rd the price

Desktop. At that price point I don't think you can get a refurbished Chromebook. Already have a monitor (not that adding a $100 for one changes the ratios much), and a Sound Devices USBPre 2.

    PC vs. Mac (hahaha)

Nah... Watson goes the whole nine yards: composing, performing, recording, mastering, and marketing. All you have to do is cash the checks!

Unfortunately retards don't enjoy economies of scale, nor is their avoided labor costs lower then in China. IBM Watson supercomputer.

My 1st video with FCP X

I like the production values, you're clearly getting better. Unfortunately the guys you're recording aren't. And what's with the guy who kind of looks like Kenny off of South Park doing bobbing around in the background? Overall +1.

4/5th of a Macintosh for 1/3rd the price

The ratios may be a little skewed but you get the idea. Intel i3 3.4GHz w/4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, DVD-RW, Win 8, $250 from Staples before CA. tax and shipping. Dedicated to recording. Woohoo. :thumbs up:

Is an old Digidesign 002 better sounding than some new(entry level) audio interface?

IMO yes. But that's because I'm a BIG believer in warranties.

Is an old Digidesign 002 better sounding than some new(entry level) audio interface?

If I just HAD to have a ProTools rig I'd have no problem dropping $150 on a Digi 002R because I could ship it off to Black Lion Audio and get it modded, but it's too tight in a Digi 002 for the Black Lion mod and I hate paying for someone else's problem. Make sure it works.

    MPC Studio

I'm not a musician, only an enabler for my musically inclined children, and among the issues that I'm fighting as I flesh out the studio are to avoid (a) paying for redundancy, and (b) getting immersed in 'sample madness'. I view the Push as a superset of an APC40 (albeit without sliders); a...

    PC vs. Mac (hahaha)

I largely agree with you though I question your assertion (not that I'm going to bother to research it) that the guy in the build is matching 5 y.o. tech. No question that the Xeon processors are the most generally available kick-ass processors currently extant, and no question that Apple is the...

    PC vs. Mac (hahaha)

As long as you restrict yourself to the dual core Xeon machines I'll concede your victory, but primarily because no other manufacturer is in that marketspace, mostly (I suspect) because there's not enough of a market to bother. A hexacore Xeon processor in a consumer desktop is serious overkill...

    PC vs. Mac (hahaha)

Who told you that?!?!?!? Absolutely incorrect. And I'm not talking out of the side of my mouth. I'm a former bench tech and system builder who has built hundreds of computers and repaired hundreds more. The components that Apple has discretion over is limited to the case, motherboard, power...
