    Roland vs. Tascam

I'm a roland user, too....but I use a virtual mixer, not a standalone recorder. Regardless, i'm still pleased with Roland. Chalk up another for Roland.

    Recording Distorted Gutiar

welcome to the bbs, art, I'm pretty new myself. I'm no expert, but the bassist in my old band recorded two demos for us, claiming he could make something of it, and the guitars always came out thin and weak. Digitech has some pretty weak factory settings on their distortion, but with a...

how do you keep your mixes in proper time?

If you, as a drummer set the tempo during recording, that's fine....but guitarists are impossible to follow as far as time goes....at least for drummers....Drummers set tempo, not follow it. But I'd advise any guitarist doing a recording to leave all tempo issues up to the drummer. Time...

    How do i cut tracks

i would suggest dealing with the dead air until your mix is good, get that straight and then mix it down....after you mix it down, cut out the dead air. unless the dead air is like 2 minutes long, its easier this way....it's a pain in the ass to cut each track exactly the same....

how do you keep your mixes in proper time?

All of this sounds good, but there's one major issue to consider: the drummer. After you do all this, the drummer has to be able to play to it. It's definitely best to record the guitars on top of the drums. It is much easier for a guitarist to make up for a drummer's inconsistencies than...

    need MORE help with vocals

Thanks for all the help everyone. I went and exchanged the 3630 for the dbx 266XL. Haven't recorded with the other guy yet, but it definitely seems to be fixing some of the 3630 issues....when i get to record with him again i'll find out.....

    need MORE help with vocals

I don't think Sam Ash carries FMR and I'm gonna hafta get something they carry in the store.....that's why I'm leaning towards the dbx

    need MORE help with vocals

Yeah....I just bought it last weekend, taking it back shouldn't be an issue....I hafta go back there to exchange a bass case I also bought, so I'll just pack up the 3630 and get something else....there's a DBX 266XL for $150....is that worth the extra $50 over the behringer....I was thinking...

    need MORE help with vocals

If I set the threshold as low as -10dB, everything sounds too squeezed. If my signal stayed below 0dB at all times, I'd have no problem with clipping. I actually have it set somewhere between 0 and -10, but closer to 0. I tried using a ratio less than 10:1, but it didn't do enough. The...

    need MORE help with vocals

So should I go get my money back before it's too late? I think it's gotta have some ability, even if it's not much....even if I do, can I go to guitar center or sam ash and pick up another one for $100 that will be usable? If I try to stick with the 3630, is there a possibility that I can...

    need MORE help with vocals

Okay. I'm in a much better situation now. My vocals don't sound muffled or muddy anymore....I think I was EQ'ing them too much. But I found a new problem. Even though I'm compressing, I still can't avoid clipping. The guy has a whiskey and cigarettes kind of voice, and when he gets a...

    need help with vocals

Tex, I guess you didn't read the other post....lol. I'm monitoring with headphones until I can save up for monitors. I actually tried recording the other guy's vocals yesterday. I think I fixed a lot of the mud and muffled issue having someone else's voice to record. I tried my own voice...

    Simple Set up

If I understand correctly, you want to mic drums and amps, mix them, and record a single track into your software, but send that back to your mixer for playback purposes. I would advise against sending a single track into your computer if this is what you plan on doing, because odds are you...

    need help with vocals

I have made the mistake of singing into the wrong side of the mic, but sssshhh, don't tell anyone. I'm probably gonna hafta try the EQ sweeping suggestion....it sounds like it could help me, but I also hope I can get a better result without EQ....

    need help with vocals

I wouldn't intentionally run phantom power to a SM 58, I just wanted to be sure that I wouldn't screw it up if I accidentally forgot to turn it off and plugged in an SM 58. I can't find the thread on mic techniques for vocals. Could you point me in that direction?

    need help with vocals

It may be easier to improve the quality of vocals with no EQ than with no IQ....oops....hehe.

    need help with vocals

I'll look at the micing techniques and see if I can improve the quality of the vocals with no IQ. Maybe the problem I was having was that I was EQ'ing at all. So if I accidentally left the phantom power on, it wouldn't harm my SM 58, correct?

    Pre-amp questions

oh ok.....I doubt it's in the card....everything but vocals sounds good....I just suck at vocals right now....I think I have a hard time with my own voice because I want to hide my insecurities rather than show off my strong points. I think a good EQ foundation will fix a lot of my problem, and...

    Pre-amp questions

I'm not really sure what the card that came in the computer is. I put in a pci card because that's what connects the VM-3100 to the computer. I would assume the Roland card should be pretty decent, why?
