The function of a tape head is to put an alternating magnetic field onto a tape. Over a period of time, residual magnetism could build up on a tape head. This could be caused by a number of things - residual magnetism on a tape which has been used on a tape machine with magnetised heads...

    Great and/or memorable drum/percussion intros

Anyone remember "Brontosaurus Stomp" by "The Piltdown Men"? ...from the 1960s? ...tympani intro. just listen to those saxes! C'mon guys, I'm sure I'm not the only Old Fart around here... - Wil

    Cleaners

When you clean the pinch-roller Do NOT USE ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL - use something which will not disolve the pinch-roller - I use Windex. After you've (CAREFULLY) cleaned the heads and guides (with isopropyl), AND you've cleaned the pinch-roller (with Windex), THEN de-gauss the heads and guides...

    spitting sound on cd???

Does the skipping occur in the same place on the disc each time you play it? I've had problems burning the cheapie CD-Rs. I found that they would play OK in some players, but would skip, causing the symptoms you describe, in others. Try playing the disc in other players. Try burning...

    power failure vs880

You might want to take a look at www.vsplanet.com which is the Roland users bbs. They're usually much more responsive than Roland Technical Support (who????) - ask your question on the VS-880 forum. Good Luck! - Wil

    Mid-Side/Figure 8 Recording

For MS to work correctly, I think the two mics would have to be coincident. You might also want to check-out the "3 to 1" rule - (see Harvey's Mega-Mic-Thread). Hope this helps - - Wil

Recommendations for a decent analog setup!!?

Er, um - OK - nobody seems to have mentioned anything about the maintenance of analogue machines. They're really only as good as how well they're maintained (cleaning, alignment, calibration). In this digital-age, when everything is so "Press-the-button", "Click-the-Mouse", "Drag-This"...

Generic shockmounts for TLM-103... what fits/works?

Check out Tensimount - I came across them (either here or on another BBS) - they looked interesting, and so I bought a couple to try them out, and was mightily impressed by their construction and their ease of use - so I bought some more, including the "Big Mike" (!) adapter, and was still...

    Presonus MP20 Class-A discreet mic pre F/A

I used a pair of SM81s going into MP20s on the vibes, and I also used an MP20 with the C3000 used on the bass, in the live recording I posted here recently. I had the IDSS controls turned fully off. I thought the recording sounded good - no colouration, and totally transparent. - Wil

Music for Porn Movies - Would you do it?

I've nothing against porn, but I'd be very careful about who I'm dealing with. You might want to check into FZ's bio - apparently he got set up by the vice-squad, and got busted... jail, bail, the whole thing... - Wil

    Cable Management....OY!!!

Good advice! I use a similar method when coiling XLR cables, and here's a useful trick. Lay the cable out so that it has no twists or kinks in it, and then plug the ends together (male XLR-> female XLR... ;) ) - if you do this, there is no way that the cable will become kinked (set theory...

    A Little Live Music

Thanks - yes, it's incredible just how some folks just don't get it! Your comment reminds me of another gig at the same location which I stumbled across quite by accident a couple of months ago. The band was Herb Pomeroy's Quartet (Herb Pomeroy - trumpet; Ryan Parker - piano; John Repucci -...

    A Little Live Music

I love Latin also, and do Jobim, and Bonfa with my other bands. At this particular gig, it wasn't me playing bass (how I wish it was!) - I did this for a friend playing bass on the recording. It seems that the trick with Latin music is to either be native, or steeped in the form from a very...

    1824 mastering/CD burn problem

Which recording mode did you use? (MTP, MAS, MT1, MT2 etc...) - I have a 1680, and when the MAS mode is used, only tracks 1-8 can be recorded to - it's not exactly obvious from the destructions, (they are written Roland-ese, after all :) ) - there may be a similar "gotcha" with the 1824...
