    Acoustic bass recording techniques

I use a Neumann KM184 suspended between the legs of the bridge using a couple of large rubber-bands, pointing towards the fingerboard. It works for me, but other people might have other solutions, which I'm sure will also work. Hope this helps - - Wil

    Spelling Lesson (OT)

Here's an old one - it keeps re-emerging, and is singularly appropriate for this thread: quote: "To all lovers of the Queen's English: The European Commission has just announced an agreement that English will be the official language of the EU, rather than German (the other possibility). As...

    Harvey, clarification please.

jet aircraft? I think Sir Frank Whittle would disagree with you... from his biography: "...1930 Applies for a patent for the jet engine concept - "a reaction motor suitable for aircraft propulsion" (granted 1932). The idea is ignored by the Air Ministry. 1931-32 Test pilot on floatplanes...

    problems with audio CD-R's

Do they sound the same no matter what CD player you hear them on? Have you tried: 1. burning at a slower speed? 2. using better quality CD-R blanks? - Wil

    Cd Rw-700 ??

My vote is for the Alesis - very versatile, and you'll find it's overall the best value for the money. If you're only interested in burning CDs then you can get something for less $$, that will only burn CDs. Go with the Alesis - you won't regret it! I paid around 900 USD for mine, and I...

Does the guy at the store know anything

I love my SM81s - here's a link to a recording I made last summer - I used a pair of SM81s on the vibes (this is an MP3, and the sampling rate was 128k, so any artifacts are caused by the compression). - Wil

    sergeant pepper

Sorry - I've just re-read my post - what I meant was that SP was mixed to sound good in mono - but that all (or most of) their earlier stuff was actually released in mono. I know that when the CD's came out, there was much debate as to whether or not they should be re-mixed for stereo (and...

    sergeant pepper

I think you're just fishing (or trolling maybe... ;) ), but just in case you're not... were you listening to the CD? If "yes" then, forget it and try to get the original vinyl - I've always been under the impression that originally, all the Beatles' stuff was mixed for mono (that's right...

what phil spector should be arrested for

I'd put anything produced by Phil Spector way way above anything produced by that bag-o-shit O.J. Fuckin' Simpleton anyday ("Capricorn One"... !!!) er, um, Wall Of Sound - cool... - Wil

    Soffit?

Well, from my understanding I would have thought that you want to mix in as neutral an environment as possible. Anything else will affect the way the mix sounds when played in the target environment - that is to say the one in which it was not mixed (e.g. home stereo, car, boom-box, WalkPerson...

    Soffit?

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but isn't the whole idea of nearfields, that they be unaffected by the room? That is to say they should be positioned so that they are away from the corners/walls/ceilings/soffits etc. etc. and anything which might affect their sound. Just a thought... - Wil

    Neumann KM184 or Rode NTK

I thought the 184 to be a replacement for the 84 which is no longer made, and is hard to come by, even used - so I bought a couple of 184s and have been very pleased... So, what's the difference? - Wil

    easy reel to reel question

    easy reel to reel question

Welcome to Home Recording dot com ! Usually the take-up reel is on the right. Some reel->reel machines are bi-directional, but most of the pro-machines run left to right, so the take-up spool is on the right. The other thing which could be a bit confusing if you haven't come across it...

    More Stereo & Mono questions

For those readers who might still be confused, "The New Stereo Soundbook" (Ron Streicher & F. Alton Everest) (ISBN 0-9665162-0-6), could well provide most of the answers to this seemingly endless argument. It makes fascinating reading, and even has Blumlein's Patent as the appendix (!!) - Wil

If this is indeed the case, I find it somewhat surprising that you posted the question in the first place. Such a basic question... from such an experienced sound-recordist... something not quite right here... Just my suspicious mind... - Wil

    mics.

I used to do a lot of bird-watching, and some recording. I still have a Sony Parabolic Reflector (PBR-330) and, used with an omnidirectional mic (in my case, an EV RE50) I found that this would beat my shotgun mic (Audio Technica AT815a) hands-down, every time! The shotgun mic really doesn't...
