How does diaphragm size/polar pattern relate to mic applications?

Well, Shiver Me Timbers! All very nice, but the English (if it is indeed English) is reminiscent of the instructions from Roland, and I think the MS diagram is wrong... (but it's good to keep this one afloat... ) Ahoy Mateys! - Wil

    Any vinyl lovers out there?

Wow! I'm not alone! I still use my Denon DP60L tunrtable with a Shure V15 Mk V-MR (I bought a spare V15 in 1985, when CDs started becoming popular - I had nightmares about not being able to get spares etc. - it's still un-opened in the box). I have about 13 linear-feet of shelves packed with...

    PZM mics

I use them a lot. For simplicity and ease of set-up they can't be beat. Here's a couple of tunes recorded at one of our live gigs, both numbers were recorded using a couple of PZMs taped to the wall behind the band. Shadow of Your Smile St Thomas I'm recording a gig this weekend - I'll be...

    Tape screech 1/4" 8 track

The tape is getting old and is starting to shed oxide. There is a thread on how to deal with this problem in the "analog only" section - it involves "baking" the tape. The guides and heads of the recorder will need cleaning also - this is a much easier job, and should be done each time the...

    akg c1000s

Actually there two adapters: 1. the PPC1000 (larger of the two) changes the pattern to hypercardioid 2. the PB1000 presence boost adapter - (5dB boost between 5kHz and 9kHz for optimum intelligibility of speech) this is a small plastic disc. Be very careful not to damage the rubber-mounted...

anyone have some suggestions on a "fairly" inexpesive shotgun mic?

You might do better to get a parabolic reflector (Sony make one called the PBR-330), and use it with an EV RE-50 (or any other omni) - that combination will beat a shotgun hands-down anytime... and will most probably be far cheaper than a good shotgun plus the oh-so-expensive "Zeppelin"...

    Dat Or Tascam Cd

Bakeing old cassette's in the oven?

"Melting the tape back together..." (!) - Well, actually what happens is that the adhesive used to bind the magnetic particles to the tape absorbs moisture from the air, losing its adhesive properties, so that the particles no longer stick to the tape. Heating the tape (carefully) drives...

Bakeing old cassette's in the oven?

You could always try the "search" function - you might be surprised at what turns up: e.g. https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?threadid=18342 This thread refers to reel-reel tape. Cassettes tend to absorb less moisture as they aren't so exposed to the air, i.e. they are totally...

    Recording LIVE music- equipment/techniques HELP!

The setup I use most often, is to tape 2 PZMs to the wall, run them through a preamp and compressor, then go straight into the recorder. The PZMs have the advantage of being unobtrusive, and won't get knocked over or spoil the view. Here's an example recorded at one of our gigs...

Stan Getz sax sound on "Girl From Ipanema"

I think the answer is mostly technique, but the sax sounds as if it's close-miced. The singer is Astrid Gilberto, wife of Joao Gilberto. She sings both english & brazilian parts. (trivia: their son was the voice of "Mowgli" in Disney's "Jungle Book" - Wil

    Best closed-ear headphones?

Try Etymotics: here's their web-site: http://www.etymotic.com/ and an article about them: http://www.beststuff.com/article.php3?story_id=1358 - - they sit IN the ear, and can take some getting used to, but they blow away anything else... - Wil

    Grand Piano Miking

2 PZMs taped (using "Gaffer Tape") to the inside of the lid - one near the bass strings, one near the treble strings. Er, um - I keep saying this, but it seems that no one has anyone even *heard* of PZM microphones.... oh well... ...yawn... - Wil

    Live show taping

er, um - there was another thread here just a moment ago - I thought I'd already said this, so I'm sorry if I'm repeating myself, but I've found the simplest way is to use a couple of PZMs taped to the wall. Very easy to set up, doesn't get in the way of the dancers, or the performers, or mess...
