how many mics are you using? If you're stuck with what you've got and this room is it you'll have to experiment with mic placement to see what sound you can get. It dosen't sound like you're going for pro sound so you should be able to get something useable.

turn it up and your compression ratio goes up and compresses the signal, experiment with it and you'll see the difference. A good way to check how much you're compressing is on the left hand side of the unit on the front hit the meter button and it'll show you how much compression you're using.
For 600 bucks you're a little limited in getting software, a sound card and a mixer. I'm assuming that you already have a decent computer.
If you're layering your recording and don't need to run a full band into the computer I'd suggest that you get a smaller sound card like an M-audio...

I agree as well, even if you have home XP. Just drop in the CD with XP Pro and it will take you through the installation basics.
When it re-boots it'll ask if you want to have a fresh install and erase the previous C:\windows directory or repair the previous install, just delete the old one...
A couple things I would try as a sanity check:
- when you're experiencing the 'leak' check your task manager processes to see what's eating up all all your memory, that'll at least help point to what the culprit is, something should be taking up an abnormal amount of space.
