Laptop HD, 5400 or 7200 RPM?

I'm with dgatwood. I've stated pretty much the same more than once over the last couple of years. 5400 is fast and 7200 is faster. Faster is better. But sometimes just fast is fast enough. :-D

    Interface or Mixer? help decide

If you record one instrument at the time, what do you need a 16 channel mixer for then?

MOTU Ultralite VS. RME Fireface 400

I've had an RME 800 for over two years now and I've never recorded more than 4 tracks simultaneously. While it's a great unit, I'm seriously considering to downsize if I can get a decent price for it. If the FF400 had existed back then, I would have probably chosen that one. What I don't like...

    computer for a home studio

You know. I've been coming to this bbs since 2002 and the same question has been asked in those years too. Back then people already used the M-Audio Delta 1010 and were usually very satisfied with the results. My point is that even a computer from 2002 was pretty much good enough for...

    home recoRRRRRRRDDDDDIng setup

BTW. I liked my MXL V67G (a friend is borrowing mine for like a year now). It just caught a lot of room reflections though (fairly wide cardioid pattern) so in my stinky, non-treated bedroom it didn't work that well.

    home recoRRRRRRRDDDDDIng setup

I wouldn't use 'cd quality' as a benchmark when shopping in that price range. Mainly because you probably don't have any money to spend on room acoustics. For $200,- your raps just won't sound as good as those from Dr Dre's studio. You'll can have a lot of fun though with $200,- worth of gear...

Creative methods for raising funds for gear

I chose to put in the extra effort to get ahead in my IT career. Still not there where I want but I'm making steady progress. Yes, it leaves me with virtually no time for music for now but I'm confident that this investment in extra (study) hours will come back to me. Also I'm not motivated or...

How powerful does my PC have to be??

Yes, that should be up to the task of recording 4 tracks simultaneously. Don't believe others who say that you can't. People were already able to record 16 24 bits tracks simultaneously >5 years ago on stock computer hardware. For better performance you may want to disable the virus scanner...

Barracuda 7200.10 or WD Raptor? 4 Audio drive

Any 7200 rpm drive on the market today is more than capable enough to handle gazillion simultaneous tracks. There's really no need to opt for 10k rpm drives. Higher rpms also really pay off when you need to get data loaded that's scattered across the drive in a lot of small files. That's when...

How much RAM are you using, 2006

512MB, ever since 2003 and still no urge to upgrade. But then again: I haven't recorded anything in ages either.

    Motu 2408

No. You can hook up more than one 2408 to a single PCI card but you can't use one without it.

    Laptop or desktop?

I've used both for recording and both got the job done. If you need portability, by all means go the laptop route.

Is The M400 The ONLY Soundstar MKII?

Sorry for the bump but I received two used Soundstar MkII's today (and if they work, for a steal). One with serial #3413 (with flush mounted on/off switch). The other with serial #44030 (no switch). Both have the words "Beyer dynamic Germany Soundstar mkII" on the ball but with different...

    Behringer HA4700

You get the same signal on all 4 stereo headphones channels. There is both a master volume that has an effect on all headphones and for each headphones channel a separate volume control as well. If you really want to know about all the I/O I'd suggest to download the manual from the Behringer site.

I need to know the BEST motherboard

To put everything a bit in perspective about what you *NEED* for recording, you should take a look at this article from April 2000 (especially the paragraph 'Road Test') http://www.prorec.com/prorec/articles.nsf/files/FB6EAECAE4AECE82862568D20005C6C1 It's a review of the Motu 24i recording...

    Soundcard Or Usb Interface???

For a laptop, Firewire. For a desktop machine, PCI or Firewire. Recording through USB has too many times been a recipe for disaster for too many people. I have good experiences with both PCI and Firewire, bad ones with USB and there are numerous HR members that can tell you similar stories.

    PCI Audio Interfaces??

I'll ask again: Ever heard of Lynx soundcards? :) (Don't compare them with the Delta cards. Totally different league)
