Ha! So it did hit 2000 mixes! When I posted on another site about 4 weeks ago after uploading my mix, the count was about 300-400, & I offhandedly mentioned that I thought it might reach 2000 - & now it has! A lot of great mixes to sift through...
Regardless of who turns out to be the winner...
Hi, thanks for sharing your mix - just thought I'd make a couple of comments:
The most notable thing to me was the buildup in the low mids, bringing quite a bit of "muddiness/boomy-ness" to proceedings. Around 200-300hz is the area where this builds up in a lot of different elements -...
Yeah, that was more or less my approach too.
I'm curious about this too - bit crushing maybe? I know that can sound pretty cool in certain situations...
It's cool mate, I wasn't trying to pick a fight or anything - just expressing my personal view of obstacles like this...I have no idea how old you are, & my comment was certainly not meant to belittle or be condescending... Age is totally beside the point...I wasn't talking about tape...
Yup, there is definitely some overdriving of the mic happening - listen to an old Joe Cocker record ("The Letter" for example) and you'll hear the same sound.
It's part of what I love about those old tracks...It's the sound of rock'n'roll, dude! Amps on the edge of meltdown, speakers breakin'...
No problem - I think that is just one of the really challenging aspects of the mix - to get a balanced sense of width with only one guitar without changing the core guitar tone too radically, or causing big mono-compatibility problems, while somehow still remaining "tasteful" (whatever you...
Thanks for the kind words - Yeah, I think Dave Pensado is fond of saying: "If everybody likes your mix, you're probably doing something wrong"... or words/sentiment to that effect! The blog was a bit of a labor of love, so I'm glad you got something out of it all.
Cheers, fH fH
Sorry GG, I missed listening to yours, & now I regret it... because it's very cool!
I'm only listening on a "grotbox" system at work, but it sounds pretty good through there - it drums, guitars, vocals & bass all sound punchy & full on this system - but I'd like to have another listen on my...
Thanks Andy! Yeah, I was going for a really driving kick drum sound on this. I did actually drop the apparent level of the bleed from the hihat in the snare mic quite a bit via eq. I kinda felt that it was reasonably under control because it compared favorably to some ACDC tracks I referenced...
Sounding very good - I feel maybe the drums are overpowering the mix just a bit during the choruses - a little automation on the drum buss would probably solve that - Cool!
Nice full sounding drums on your mix - hmmm - not sure about the stop - cool idea though!
I think maybe the drums are a little too dominant & the guitar is a bit small by comparison - maybe just a little too thinned out in the low-mids. The drums could lose a little bit of "weight" in the subs...
Very, very nice mix - nothing I could fault - my personal preference would be for a little more low end punch out of the kick, but the balance you have between the kick & bass is really lovely. Top job!
No problem - Yeah, I wasn't talking bout reverb in the classic sense so much as "room" sound - just some dimension/depth - what Fab calls "the office"...and you're right, because mixing on cans reveals everything in great detail, there is the tendency to under-cook that side of things...
Another really good mix.
Vocals: great.
Guitars: very good.
Drums: have a touch of boxiness in them - not a huge problem - just could do with a few eq dips around the 200-400hz area in the low mids of the kick & toms (OH?)
Bass: Good level, but there is some muddiness coming through that...
