Guido,
Lexicon makes reverbs in the $15,000 dollar range, the 960L... a bit pricey but hey, it looks neat :) I'm a fan of the Ursa Major stuff in the over $1,000 range.
And to answer the question, both Lex and TC Elec. make great units in your price range, if you can check some out at a local...
No one beats Tape Op for useful information when it comes to recording without an SSL. Get Mix if you want, but it's not necessary, it's a pretty mag with decent reviews but very little practical info for someone who wants to start recording at home.

Light,
I was speaking of Charlie Hunters Novax 8 String, 3 bass strings/5 guitar strings (www.novaxguitars.com)... and showing that 8 string guitars are made by makers like Conklin. And to the people who think that a great jazz guitar has to be $10,000, check out www.mollinst.com
The laminate...
There are manufacturers that make 8 stings (unlike like Charlies Novax). Conklin makes some of the most beautiful instruments I've ever seen, but they're not for metal or rock, they're pretty much made for jazz.

Well if you want to get technical "Fender" equipment hasn't been made since January of 1965. But why whine about it... they still make some great guitars for the money.

For the cost of a decent plug in you can find an Otari 5050 tape machine (1/4" 2 track) on ebay. Don't buy one that is selling for like $50 but try and spend a little more for a unit in good working condition. This way you won't have to spend too much on maintaining the the machine. You can buy...
A balanced cable (TRS) isn't necessarily a stereo cable. The positive and negative carry the same sound, while traveling down the cable one side is phase reversed, both sides carry any added noise that may come into the cable between point A and B, on the other end the side that was phase...
Compression on the radio is not the compression that was used in the studio... no matter what goes on the radio it gets the shyte compressed out of it... so listening to the radio for compression is a moot point. Compressors are one of the few pieces of equipment that can get overused (in my...
A TRS cable can't be unbalanced, that's why it's a TRS (Tip, Ring, Sleeve). You can hook up unbalanced cables to a TRS, but that would negate the point of it being TRS.

If you add a second ADAT you won't have room to return effects on the board, you'd need to either save your pennies for 24 tracks or only record 12 tracks so you can have a couple stereo returns at mixdown... or if you needed all 16 tracks you could bounce guitar overdubs, bg vox and other...
If the project is staying digital I'll usually just use 24/44.1, but if I'm going to transfer to tape for mixdown (track drums and bass to tape, overdubs in PT) I'll track at 192...

Yeah, I did get MC Honkey, it's a great album!
Okay, if we're going to talk about Hi-Def (I just got a new stereo, WOOHOO!) I'm going to have to plug the SACD Bob Dylan and Miles Davis discs... you will never listen to CDs the same again (I can't believe nobody thought of this architecture for...
Okay, it's getting to be that time of the year when SPIN and every other crappy mag prints there "Top of 2003" lists and was just wondering what everyones picks are for production this year?
Here are mine:
Daniel Lanois - Shine
The Mars Volta - De-loused in the Comatorium
Steely Dan -...
