Yes, running the midi files through a synth, which is the only way you'll hear them. I don't remember what the specific steps are in the ancient version of Cakewalk I was using but I know it was possible using midi and SoundFonts.

In this particular case I'm isolating a vocal by exactly lining up a vocal mixed with a track and the original track and phase inverting one of them. I know there are apps that do this but from the couple I've demo'd the results are lackluster. Another reason might be to A/B different mixes.

That's how you mix tracks - it has to be done as a real time recording? There's no "Mixdown" function?

How do you mix to a new track? Don't find this mentioned in the user guide. My main familiarity is with Cakewalk, Reaper seems to have avoided using the nomenclature found within Cakewalk. Thanks!

I fooled around with a multiband compressor to mitigate the low end on the piano to try and bring out her voice. A is the original B is the eq'd version. Below is a sampler of some other performances of hers - you might want to lower the volume, the level is a lot hotter than the other files...

She's singing along to a pitch-shifted karaoke track which is why the piano sounds burbly. I'm playing with the resultant mix. Yes, she's a fantastic singer though it's strictly a hobby for her.

Interesting. In both cases the backing track pitch is lowered via a function on the karaoke site, which may introduce inconsistent variations? They were both recorded with a "What U Hear" style function off the sound bus with Audacity. This is the first time I've tried it on this particular...

On this particular one I doubt it since it's just a karaoke performance and I'm using the same karaoke track. Granted mine is a *recording* of the track but that's always been fine in the past.
