Try: Try some MXL 991s. From what I hear, they are identical to the MXL603s as far as parts go. DON'T get the Behringer C2 pair. They will serve you OK for just getting something to listen to, but they are muffled and turd-like. I know, because I modded one with my own circuit and it opened...

Shure 819 I have a Shure 819. If you buy one, you will find a use for it. It makes a great bass drum mic.

Power Also, make sure that your line outs are not crossing any power cords. If they have to cross power cords, do so at a 90 degree angle. Otherwise you might have a bad filter capacitor in that section.

Chilly How do you keep it chilled sitting right above your tube preamps?

MXL603s I know the Marshall MXL603S microphone has a zener diode which immediately regulates your 48V phantom power to 12V for the preamp section. The 12V is passed to a DC converter which ramps the capsule polarization voltage back up to over 48V. I'm sure a lot of mics are built this way. So...
