Recording Techniques for a micro-budget film

I would look into that Tascam mic or a shotgun mic. I've seen posts online about building a cheap and easy diy shotgun mic. The quality may be poor, but with a horror movie it may fit. Whatever you can get your hands on should work. Then because you have a few mics yourself you can go back...

    the "week or so break"

Definately listen to them. It will help give you an idea of the style you are going for and what that final product sounds like. Then once you've gotten into mixing you are familiar with what you want the sound to end up as. The waiting period is to get your ears away from the same stuff...

    Where do I Start!?

I would recommend a Macbook. Macs come with a program called Garageband that you can use to make beats. It's not the best software or anything, but its free. You would probably also want to invest in a Midi controller as well to make it easier to use. If you don't go with a Mac (they're...

recording in a living room or basement/garage

I have a mobile recording rig and am going to record a rock band. I have two options for locations to record. One is a living room with vaulted ceilings, and the other is a large basement/garage. They want to record the bass and kit together which is already set up in their basement. The...

Make one source sound like hundreds

Thank you all for the replies, I think we're all thinking along the same lines. As far as finding video from the event and then using the audio...that would be a lot easier however I want to do this myself just for the hell of it. I think what I'll do is set up the mics and blow from close...

Make one source sound like hundreds

A friend of mine wants me to add vuvuzelas to his video. This is an attempt to recreate the last World Cup in South Africa. What is the best/most authentic way to take one source and make it sound like many? What I have: 1 vuvuzela, 3 mics (and a subkick I made that i'll try just for fun)...

What else do i need other than my mic for good sound quality?

For good sound quality I would suggest a better mic. My guess is that the $70 mic is not going to sound as professional as you think or hope. Like the other post said, there is a long line of things that go into play when recording. Personally I think the mic is the most important piece of...

    Problems multi-tracking on Macbook

I'm far more worried about recording than mixing. I can at least bounce the tracks down and whatnot as needed. I just don't want to get there, and set up and then start recording and not be able to record everything. If I wanted to buy more memory, what do I need to do, and whats the price?

    Problems multi-tracking on Macbook

I'm going to be multitracking a band soon and I'm not sure if my computer will be able to handle it. What I have: MacBook 2.1 processor- 2GHz Intel Core Duo memory- 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 5DRAM Motu 896HD (firewire) I've recorded a track here and there but nothing too big. Last summer I...

First multi track ever :) seeking any 'mastering' guidance

I'd suggest breaking down the recording and not doing it live, or do the instruments live and then record the vocals later. This will open up some options for you and give you more control over the mix.

Getting a good kit sound with limited mics

Thank you all for the ideas. I'm going to do everything possible to avoid copping out with samples. It's not really my style, but if the track needs it I'll have to do what needs to be done.

I need some advice on getting into DIY projects

I really want to get into building my own things so the more information on theory the better. I'll definately look for that book (electronic projects for musicians) I think it may clear a lot of things up better than a general electronics book. Thanks for the advice

I need some advice on getting into DIY projects

With kits like those do they give you the theory behind the circuitry or anything or is it more of a 'follow the steps until its complete' kind of project? I really want to learn what electronically is going on with the signal as I build something and undertand the theory rather than blindly...

Getting a good kit sound with limited mics

I'm not sure how well I'd be able to get a mic in the kick. Along with only having three mics I only have one mic stand (without a boom). It's going to be tough all around. I may be able to ghetto rig something up that can get inside. I have some pvc pipe type things I may be able to rest...

I need some advice on getting into DIY projects

Yeah, I have the basic tools. I can't say I'm great at soldering or anything. I can solder cables and such. I also do have a multimeter and wire cutters and all that stuff. As far as books I have electronics for dummies. Probably not the best especially when it comes to electronics...

Getting a good kit sound with limited mics

Thanks for the replies. I think its just going to be a bunch of experimenting and seeing what happens. If it sounds good, it IS good.

    New Members: Introduce Yourself Here!

I'm Everyday. I have a little home studio that I've been building on for a while, also trying to get my feet wet in the DIY realm. As much as I would love to be a musician, I am not which is why I stick to the engineering/production side of it all. Eventually I'd like to start a studio for at...

I need some advice on getting into DIY projects

I'm looking for advice on getting started when it comes to building my own gear. I've never really been into electronics or anything so I'm way out of my league. I've been teaching myself from books and notes from old classes but it doesn't seem to make any sense. I understand how a lightbulb...

Getting a good kit sound with limited mics

I'm going to be tracking for some friends and I'm limited on mics for recording the kit. I have a Motu 896HD so inputs are not an issue. The mics I have are; SM57, AT2020, a cheap behringer dynamic (it was really cheap, don't judge me) that I don't recall the model of, and a homemade subkick...
