I have the TL Audio 5001 which is four pre's in one unit, so I can't speak for the compressor. As for the pre's, they were a big step up from the budget stuff I had before (ART Tube MP, Yamaha mixer, etc.). Expect 'clarity' rather than 'warmth' in this tube-ish design.
Two tips that came my...
Adam's suggestion is right on.
I usually get mogami cable from www.redco.com
(Mention that you saw their ad in Tape Op Mag and they'll give you a small percentage off. about enough to cover shipping)
and my gold plated Neutrik connectors from www.fullcompass.com
Though Sweetwater has free...
I think if your careful and do the right reading before hand, you'll be fine. It really is quick and easy once you get the hang of it. If you want to be certain everything is coming out right, buy a cable tester or on the cheap a continuity tester and double check your work. Good Luck
BTW what...
You may have already considered and dismissed this, but building your own is a really affordable way to get good cables on the cheap. Learning to solder won't take more than a few minutes w/google and a few minutes experimenting.
Check out www.redco.com for Mogami bulk cable and more.
and...
You might find value in the first DVD or two in the Ken Burns Jazz documentary. There's some pretty useful information about the early years and technology of recording - along with a very thorough history of Jazz.
It might be a good reference to start you on your journey.
Good luck
That's hard to remember, I think the mic was $200-250 and the Lundahl transformer was $25-40. The rest of the mod was hookup wire, solder, and time as I recall.
I've had some fun with my Oktava ML52 with the Lundahl Tape Op modification. It doesn't work for everything, understand, but it's cheap and full of character.
A interviewe in Tape Op a while back felt the Rode NT2 was a good stunt double for the 87. I've never used one (just a NTK), but thought I could help. Sorry if I broke the sarcastic answer chain...
Chris S. made a good suggestion. But I thought you'd like to know about this site too, http://duc.digidesign.com/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=UBB32 it's been really helpfull for me an my PT woes. Friendly people and a lot of info in previous searches to take advantage of.
BTW, more RAM is only...
I got to put in a bug in your ear about Bag End speakers. I've installed two pairs in two different locations with great results. They were the TA5000's which are one 15 with a horn (they also have a 12 inch version that sounds good too).
I don't know what they do to deliver that kind of...
Sounds like my recent experience. I called ahead and moron number one tells me they have one 2500 left. I get there not more than 45 miutes later and it's all of a sudden been transfered to another store. Nevermind they had the power suppply sitting right on the counter between him and me. Thats...
I'd look for an old Selmer Signet Special. It's wood and a pretty good instrument. If properly cared for should be in good shape for many more years. Marry that with a Larry Combs mouthpiece and it should have a lot of potential.
At the $200 range though, you may want to plan on a few timely...
I had one and I outgrew it quickly. I got duped by a review that was way to kind. It had a weird honky quality, if you ask me. Since traded it in for a 4040 then a NTK. Large leaps ahead. I'd think for the money there's probably more value in a 57. Your results may vary...
I'm glad to hear someone else is using a passive system.
I had the same combo - 20/20's and a TA1600 -at first. Used that amp for many years and thought it was a good value.
But then I scored a great deal on a Hafler P1500 so I decided to A/B them. The difference was very noticeable and...

Perhaps this thread is played out, but I 'm pretty excited to share. I just finished a pair of the Tape Op DIY Mics you mentioned, and I couldn't be happier. I had all the tools before hand and found a good deal on the connectors at Full Compass so I felt it was cost effective. I just finished a...
Well I guess design, not so much that I want to make the next Neve-ish clone but rather, I'd like to understand how all this works.
Thanks for the link, I'll try to digest all that first.
