    monitoring with home-audio speakers

The overwhelming majority of "budget" studio monitors are nothing but home HiFi speakers with an ugly/industrial finish. The overwhelming majority of "budget" studio monitors are designed to sound 'great' on playback... just like a HiFi speaker is designed to sound 'great' on playback. An...

newb question, here, but i figure this is the section to ask

With all due respect; a "passive" direct box employs a transformer and requires no external power source. An "active" direct box is transformerless and requires external power to run the impedance matching [differential] circuit. There are active direct boxes [TAB-funkenwerk V-71; Avalon...

    Quitting

IV-I I did a lot of work with a producer named "Jimmy Miller" in the mid-late 80's/early 90's. Jimmy was best known for some of his earlier work with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Motorhead, and a few others. I first met him when working on the Johnny Thunders "In Cold Blood" record. One...

    famous artist rec. techniques

Which famous artist? ...on which famous recording? One of the cool things from that era was that E-V-E-R-Y engineer and studio had a different sound and a different set of techniques... so depending on the artist, the studio and the engineer you get different skill sets on different recordings...

    Guitar Tracks?

If you do it right... one. The other answer is "how long is a piece of string"... but I'd try to get it in one track each from each of the guitars... but they best be one track with feeling, and attitude, that scare young children at great distances. Best of luck with it.

    Quitting

In my experience the engineer is a player on the session... the engineer is playing the "recording studio". A beginner engineer will have the same chops playing "recording studio" as a beginner guitar player will have playing guitar. The fact that they can get music to move through a wire is...

    question about little labs red-eye.....

Not a struggle... plug the instrument into the DI... plug an XLR cable into the DI out, then run a 1/4" cable to the amplifier and you're good to go. Great box the Redeye!! You can even use it as a 're-amp' thing down the road if you'd like. Best of luck with it.

    is this bad mic placement?

In many ways it really is about comfort as you want the drummer to give you the best performance possible... however, in this particular case it's the drummer that would be my first guess as to why there is a problem in the first place. By raising the cymbals you'll do two things... first...

    mic bleed thru

The best way to isolate a vocal from an acoustic guitar [and vice versa] when you're recording both at the same time is by using two microphones capable of "Figure 8" pattern. You point one mic at the singer's mouth with the "null" of the 'Figure 8' pattern aimed at the guitar. You point the...

    Compression during drum tracking.....COMMON PRACTICE???

Unfotunately it's a bit too common... and usually performed with crap compressors that are overused [which makes the product a real bitch to mix]. I would recommend that if you absolutely feel the need to compress the drums to do it at a point after the recording process when you can pay full...

Hands Down.... You're favorite Mic Pre?

Hands down... what's the best car? best woman? best wine? best band? When you can answer those you can anwer best pre-amp.

    Did apogee make a .....

You will find all kinds of extra love for the AD-8000's with a "Big Ben" master clock... far better depth and resolution to the audio... IMNTLBFHO, the Big Ben makes the AD-8k's sound as good as many modern converters [I have no love for AD-8k's in general... with a Big Ben they are indeed...

    Fucking Picolo Snares...

Yeah... those things ruined Steve Jordan's career... and frankly, I think that damn drum ruined the 'X-Pensive Winos' stuff. If you mic them from the side you'll get a nice ratio of crack to ring... if you tune them properly for the song they can add a nice texture. If you don't take the time...

    I learned the most from...

That would be a good bet... I don't "vote" on things like this... I think these kinds of "polls" are generally pretty dumbass, inconclusive, and often misleading. I will be happy to participate with a comment or anecdote... but for the most part, I don't participate in the polling process. Is...

    condenser for snare?

Josephson C-42's will often work like a charm... AKG 451's often won't suck. It will depend more on the tuning of the drum and what you have in mind for a snare sound that will fit with the music than anything else. Best of luck with it.

    does anyone mic the bottom

Everytime I do I'm sorry I did... I can never get those mics to sound worth a damn.

    I learned the most from...

I had a great mentor who taught me how to listen, not just hear, but to listen. From there I was able to devise many of my own techniques and develop my style as an engineer but his tutelage was invaluable. I learned most of what I know from reading and hands on and thinking about this crap...

Please rank in order of importance...

Oh fuck me... I wasn't saying "thing 4 and thing 1", I was using music theory notation for the "Plagal Cadence"... I was agreeing with "Blue Bear" that the item of number 1 importance was the players... Ya know... it's not really amusing if you have to fucking explain it... music theory... it's...

    Recording Bass Guitar

That's great... but our P-bass is a Mexican P-bass... cheapest one they had in the store. I spent about 4-5 hours getting the setup pretty happenin' and it's an exceptionally viable instrument. I have a friend with a Japanese P-bass that kinda kills our Mexican one... and there are a couple of...
