    dual monitor support

Are you running a Mac or PC. I'm on Mac (G5) and it doesn't seem to matter. worst case scenario is set resolution to whatever the 'least able monitor' (now's there's a decription worth discussing) is capable of.

    Post fader levels

OK- I come from an "old school" tape background where near saturation was the goal for signal levels. With digital, the consensus (amoung those in the know) is -16dB - -14dB so tere's plenty of room for compression. Based on some rather "ugly" sessions I've done with respect to clipping and...

    Recording Bass

I've always operated/been so influenced/lectured/taught that DI bass was best. among the arguments was the length of a room to fully capture the low freq (32') and vibration artifacts, etc. A friend has loaned me his SVR and a David Eden for a project. My room is small (max from amp 20')...

    Recording clean? Digital distortion?

I'd suggest recording clean and then adding the effects/plug-ins. otherwise if you play the solo of you life but don't like the effects you had in the chain you're SOL having said that, I understand the difficulty in playing clean and trying to imagine sustain and crunch.... Headphone amp?

I've got a pair of the Behringer Powerplay Play ProXL's. I had Rolls (53... whatever before). The Behr's inputs are parallel and the outputs routed thru a patchbay (as I have a possible 13 Headphone connections in my studio "room" even tho the 2 Behr's only have 8 (total) outs. I like the...

Patchbays and Cables, . .Oh My!

I like the NeutriK "normalized" patchbays" as you can pull the boards out and reverse to change the switching. This gives a lot of flexibility (and fewer patch cables) as you can run to the patch bay (back) and pass thru to where ever you need the connection. From the front side, depending on...

    Where is your studio located?

I took over the family room /den whcih serves as the "control room" and theres conveniently a bathroom off of it. There used to be an aquarium in the wall which was downsized to a smaller opening to make room for a door. The smaller opening is glassed (tilted plastic lam dual pane ) which looks...

Stereo Micing Acoustic Guitar with an SM57 and an MXLv67G

I've found a pencil condenser to work best-the MXL 991 for the fretboard and a larger diaphragm for the soundhole (AT-4040... even the Octavia's worl relatively well. Dynamic mic's need to be quite close for real good sound capture (IMO... but then again...) ...opinions expressed here are base...

    Help Dwarf buy a cab

I'd take the Hartke. (door #3) Behringer makes good stuff ( I like their 1953 tube pre-amp and the headsphone amps) and then there's the lemons. We bought some Behr- subs and one of the cabs delaminated on one side within a month. They would have covered it under warranty (had we saved the...

    recording distorted guitars?

Try 2 SM57's one close (6") slightly off axis from the cone and a second one ~ 4' back dead level /straight on with the middle of your cab. Try gain (post fader) at about -14 to -16 dB Pre fader gain about -10dB This has worked well for me with my Mesa with 4 10's and a second bottom 1 - 12...

    Starfield Amps

Aside from what I've found on Harmony Central, anybody know about these amps? I've a friend who wants to trade me a Starfield SVA-100 combo - 100 watt handwired tube amp, 2 x 12 Cestions, made in Leeds, UK somewhere between 92 - 96, and a venture backed by Ibanez and Tama. Ibanez still (or once...

Pre EQ and Post EQ (effective differences?)

I'm sure someone will jump in if this isn't exactly correctly, but pre-eq essentially cuts or boosts the range of frequencies in the signal... the tone pot on a guitar is essentially an EQ device, with most being linear, so you have one giant slider for the range, lots of bass cuts the treble...

How do you record your guitars?

I seem to get the best results by having folks (including myself) use the amp they typically gig with, including whatever effects they use. I suggest (and do myself) record at the same volume I use at rehearsal (which BTW sounds quite loud in a room all by itself). I use a SM57 about 3' away...

Using a Fender Leslie with a Hammond H-182

I got the Hammond for my home studio for free. I was told it was a B-3 (big organ, pedals.... looked about like what I remembered B-3's looking like).... anyway turns out to be a H-100 series (the 182 has to do with cabinent style and wood finish). I've been offered a Fender Leslie for free...
