    Serious Piano Tracking

I once played piano for a demo recording of some mediocre female singer (with a rich daddy who paid for a recording in the biggest, most expensive studio in the country). The piano in that place was a Steinway grand, and the engineer used a couple of 414 as a near coincident pair (or one for...

recording acoustic piano onto computer, help!

Well, as Don said, you nedd two mics to record a real stereo sound. However, if you're just using the internal mic, you might want to record a stereo file (although it won't be stereo) because you can only burn stereo WAV files. My experience with Cubase is limited, but I never really figured it...

recording acoustic piano onto computer, help!

Yeah, WAV is what you want. It's burnable. A good cheap piece of software you should think of, is N-track. You can download a demo from fasoft.com and see how you handle it. If you decide to buy it, it's only 60$ or so for the full featured version. What kind of a budget are you on? You could...

STupid SB live, need help on recording

Ok.. Something is defenitly wrong here. Firsty of all, you should get a cable that has a stereo 1/8" plug on one end, and splits into two 1"4" mono plugs. Since these are almost impossible to find, try and get a 1/8" stereo to 2 RCA, and use RCA-1"4" adpators. That should take care of the cable...

    Grumble Grumble Grumble...

Hmmpf.... Unfortunately, the guitar playing does not really do justice to the song. I like the song a lot, but the guitar sort fo has that "amaturish" feel to it... The vocals sound pretty damn good. You were a little generous with the reverb, but that's a matter of taste, I guess. I'd offer to...

    PZMs and upright pianos

Han - I don't have any. My idea is to mount Panasonic electret capsules (powered with a little 9V power supply, like the tape-op mics) facing down in a piece of plexiglass, and use it as a PZM element. I might stick a very thin piece of open-cell foam on the bottom of the plexiglass to provide...

    Hiss coming from cable?

Hmmmpf. Make sure that the pre-amp is connected to the line-in jack of the SB, and not the mic in. Its a common newbie mistake, and sometimes you just accidently mess up the wires. This could cause a lost of hiss....

can i record mics via line in without a preamp, using an xlr-1/4" adaptor?

In a word, no. Impedance is one thing, and level is another. The mic's output is simply too low to be used with a line input. You can get a small mixer and do exactly what you described, or a deticated pre-amp. An Audio Buddy is a nice dual pre-amp that can be bought for 80$ if my memory serves...

    PZMs and upright pianos

Hi, I was wondering about common PZM mic placements when recording an upright piano. I want to mount two electret capsules PZM style on my piano for a semi-permanent quick-and-dirty way to record it. Should I tape them to the lid, the back, anywhere else? How about the spacing between the two...

    SP B1, Behringer B1---same mic?

If you check out www.listeningsessions.com you can compare these mics side by side. I gotta tell you, in my opinion, the Behringer was the flat out winner as the worst microphone in this shoot out. It just sound totally different than all the other mics. You'd think they were micing a different...

    Good low priced kick mics?

Rimshot - ECM stands for Electret Condenser Microphone. Actually, I didn't get this idea from site. I think I read it in the Tape Op tutorial in how to build these microphone. I think one can get a decent kick sound by placing a 58' right outside the kick and an ECM a few feet in front of it...

    Good low priced kick mics?

This may be a REAL stretch, and I've yet to try it out myself (just need a freakin' drum kit... :D ), but I heared some people were getting good results with throwing an electret condenser inside the kick drum. Hey, It goes down to 20hz! You can get a Behringer ECM-8000 for 30-40$ in the US, or...
