    Which mic?

Yeah, SM57, or SM58. Those are very standard mics and have been for ages, and there's plenty of reason why. I've had six of each for fifteen years for live and recording and still don't have a single problem with either.

    Was this "emo" before Emo?

My favorite emo tune is hands down... "You can't play tarzan unless you take your shirt off"

    Feedback on this grindcore mix.

I like it. This type of music needs to sound that wrecked. Early Napalm is not pretty.

    Home Recording Show?

American Mix Idol. To hell with singers, let's critique on compression settings. Randy: "Yo dog, it was muddy up front, but by the time you mixed in the bongo's at the end and ran the choir vocals through that toilet paper roll.....bam!......we got a hot one tonight!!" Paula: "I don't know...

Playing Cubase files in Pro Tools?

You probably have to actually export the individual files out of Cubase, and then drag them into Pro Tools. Pro Tools will convert the files if needed when you pull them in. If your files in Cubase aren't solid tracks all the way through, then you'll probably have to do mix downs of all of...

whats your favorite vst plugin and why?

I use Waves rennisance stuff on virtually everything. I'm a huge fan of L2 and C4 as well. The rest of my favorites are all Bomb Factory RTAS. Why? On the VST stuff it's because they all sound really good and do the job very well with an easy to use interface, not to mention they're not very...

    EQ'ing Toms

Glen has some great points there. The bottom line is to do only what needs to be done in order to make your toms sound good. You'll hear this a thousand times and it's totally true...sure there are some basic guidelines when it comes to this stuff, but any given track is never going to need...

    tape effect?

I'm not familiar with the Barlow song, but yes, Pollard swears by running his vocals through a Memory Man. The Hot Freaks music was recorded live into a boom box, and the vocals were done later with some kind of large cheap Radio Shack mic into a Memory Man, and into a Tascam Portastudio. He...

Really strugglin to get bass drum thru the mix

Bass can be real difficult. In my opinion, bass is up there with vocals as far as tracks you want to put your best pre's on. I used to have to eq like crazy to get bass to work a lot, but after I invested a little money in a good Sans Amp bass DI, it was all so much easier. Post a sample...

    Ringing EARS!

This is exactly why I recently stopped doing live sound in extremely loud bars. It's not worth it.
