Help getting the guitar sounding "right"

If you have a good sound through your amplifier for live gigs and jamming, you could invest in a decent microphone. Plug the mic into your computer's mic slot, and mic the cabinet (if you want to know about mic technique, look at the zillions of posts on it in the Mics section of this forum)...

Starting a studio, not sure what equipment to buy...

In terms of software, for home recording, you might want to check out Cakewalk HomeStudio 2004. In fact at http://www.cakewalk.com there is a workable demo available for you to try. I use their program called Sonar, but for a newbie, it might be a little too overwhelming. HS2004 does a lot of...

    Mix Board Maintenance...Help Please.

SED - Yes, I agree. It's called denatured alcohol. As a matter of fact, you can find it in a lot of hobby stores. I use it not only to clean my board, but to clean my RC trucks. Denatured alcohol is just alcohol without any water. The rubbing alcohol one buys at the store has water in it...

    Tascam 2488

I know a lot of people use the 2488 with good results. However, if you're looking for a good sound from the mic, you might use a dedicated preamp.

    Mixing drums

You know, I've heard it this way, and I've also heard it laid out as if the listener was the drummer. Any ideas as to why the descrepency? or is it not even worth discussing?

    good rack/mixer tutorial??

There's also a decent book I found that goes into setup, operation, techniques, etc. It's called "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" A few little things here and there are a little dated, but by far, most of the info in the book is definitely helpful. -E

I have up to $500 for monitors..

I really dig my Event TR5's and those are just 5" cones. They're quite clear and as accurate as one could expect from a 5" woofer. Because of that and your price range, I'd check out the TR8's. They've got 8" woofers, they're bi-amped, etc. Grandma's has them at $249 a piece...

    Transients

Yeah, on my way to work I always walk by transients. They're everywhere. I think transients would affect microphones probably by stealing them and selling them for money/food/beer. ...damned transients.

    Project5, or Sonar?

well, I don't know Project 5, but I believe that Sonar has Acid abilities, so you'd be at home with that. If P5 has it too, then I don't know what to tell you :)
