    Weird mic behavior

My mistake on the actual mics. They are ADK SC-1's and not AKGs. Sorry about that. As far as the phantom power goes, I tried it two different ways with similar results. First I powered the mics directly from the recorder using the on-board preamps. Next I tried individual mic preamps (one...

    Weird mic behavior

I've been working with a pair of AKG SC-1 condenser mics in an ORTF setup lately and noticed something kind of weird. When I apply the phantom power to both mics, I get a high pitched whine in the signal coming from the mics. It sometimes can change pitch kind of like a police siren, but it...

    Recording advice needed

I know this has been discussed in various forms before, but I would like to get some fresh opinions. I will be recording a concert band (about 50 piece) in (and I hate to say this) a gymnasium. I have no choice in the venue, but I do have some choice in how I approach the recording. My...

Please Help to make a vocal track sit properly

I concur with Mixsit, you got a mess o' questions there. What I do for vocals, first off is try and use the fewest effects you can. The more you put in there, the more likely you are going to have problems. Keep it simple. In general, I start with EQ. I start with both a high and low...

Help! Questions About BUSS RECORDING in my Fostex VF160ex

Mike: I'll try and answer some of your questions I guess it really depends on what you want to do. I have a VF160EX and use it for several things. First I use it as a portable field recorder if I am recording somewhere I don't want to have to drag my entire computer setup (I use Sonar 8PE...

What are the best microphone cables i can buy for recording vocals?

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said "crappy behringer preamp". Whatever cable you pick, your signal chain is only as good as the weakest link, which from experience with these things, I'd have to say is your preamp. As far as cables go, I'd have to say that Monster cables are...

    Separating songs - VF160EX

It's a bit of a manual process, but I would set your clipboard points at the beginning and end of each song. Then mix it down to another track, or send it to a wav file or CD. msr

Fostex vf160-ex and Fruity Loops Studio

You can use the ADAT output from the VF160EX and run it into an ADAT input on your computer (assuming you have an optical ADAT connection on your sound card). That will give you 8 additional inputs using your VF160EX as an interface. I'm not sure if FL will allow you to see all of those inputs...

    VF160ex Mixdown Dillema/Question..Help!

You are going to want to make sure you use the clipboard when you burn to CD however, otherwise you could end up with your 20 min of silence. msr:)

Is Lexicon Lambda USB 1.1 or 2.0? can't find info...

I have an Omega and it works fine with 2.0. I suspect the Lambda will work with either 1.0 or 2.0 as well. msr

    Alternate CD-RW for VF160?

Oh, sorry, you are correct. I was thinking you were looking for a replacement hard drive. My mistake. msr

    Alternate CD-RW for VF160?

According to a Fostex product bulletin from 2005, this drive is supposed to work with the VF160EX: Western Digital Caviar WD400BB/WD800BB. Looks like you can still find them out there. Any thoughts on whether I should pick one of these up for my VF160EX even though it doesn't need a new...

    New MTR: Fostex LR16 !!!

I have a Fostex VF160EX and think it's great for what it is. However, IMHO, a company with little or no US support is someone I will stay away from for future purchases. I would think twice about investing that kind of $$ with someone who will be almost impossible to get help from if things go...

    Looking for WARMER/Richer vocals

There seems to be no shortage of opinions posted here so I'll toss mine on the fire and you can take it for what it's worth. I actually own a Beheringer mixer, Lexicon Omega, and two Presonus TubePre pre amps. Here's what I can tell you. First off, just accept the fact that the Beheringer...

    VF160 and ADAT device

ADAT device Yes, the DigiMax has an internal sample rate of either 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz and a reported bit depth of 24. However the VF160EX (the recording device) has a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz and a reported "quantization" of 16 bit linear (non expanded). I am just not sure if the VF160EX...

    New Fostex Forum

Error code 45 My best guess is "Remaining disk capacity is insufficient". This is based on an error code list for the VF16. Perhaps your disk is full or corrupted. msr

    VF160 and ADAT device

I've got a Fostex VF160EX and am wondering if anyone knows if a PreSonus Digimax D8 preamp will work with it using the ADAT lightpipe input. I know a Beheringer ADA8000 is supposed to work, but the Presonus has much better preamps. Thanks for any help. msr:)

    New Fostex Forum

Fostex Forum This is really too bad. I bought a VF160EX several years ago. It has since been discontinued but I still really like the unit. however, without good product support, I would really hesitate to buy another Foxtex product. I feel good product support is really critical and these...

Question about using Limiter during Recording

Thanks for the advice. I thought I had at least 3 db of headroom last time, but over the course of the recording session I had a few places where I still went over the top. I guess I might compromise and try and go with about 6 db headroom next time and put in a limiter up around -2 db...

Question about using Limiter during Recording

Recently during a recording session, I thought I had everything set as far as levels were concerned. However, when going over the audio later, I discovered that I had a few places where I had clipping issues. So here's my question: Is it reasonable to set the trims so that recording levels...
