Is this a "new" amp or new to you? If it is brand new, I would take it back where you bought it. I had a Framus Cobra that did something similar with the gain on the drive channel. I think a bad preamp tube was the culprit but it has been a few years and I can't remember the exact diagnosis.

Completely believable. At the price of one cheap FX pedal they are basically a disposable amp. I own the 15 watt spider IV along side a Marshall, Mesa and an Engl. The tone sucks but for potability and low volume practice.....I don't know that it can be beat price wise.

Its not always about replacing what you already tracked. We often re-amp and blend with the original tracks to get distorted guitars thicker/punchier. For example....we might track with a Rectifier which is thick and punchy and then re-amp with a 5150 and blend to taste with the Mesa tracks to...

Build yourself a true bypass loop pedal. If you can solder, you can get one going for under 50 bucks (unless you want to use relays like some of the fancier ones). I can post pictures/explain some of the ins and outs of the one I built if you like. It really helps by taking some of the noiser...
