    From your description if you are micing really close you might be getting a bit of the player breathing in. It takes a lot of air to power deep brass and since the player does not want to back off too much some of their breathing in will draw air from inside the instrument.

    The only thing styrofoam might be usefull for is as a physical isolator. In other words if you were doing a raised floor you might try uing a closely spaced array of the styrofoam cubes as the physical support for a layer of plywood subfloor.

    bpape has it right. Unfortunately finding a way of holding the compressed R-13 in place while still leaving it exposed to the sound waves may be more trouble and expense than its worth. Maybe just add some extra insulation to the attic space and let it do what R-13 was designed to do.
