My home recording mastering set up is the Dbx Quantum.
I have not used the TC Finalizer, though I've heard a few complaints that the EQ isn't great on it. I wouldn't know.
I've got no complaints about the Quantum - I use it for a whole bunch of things from tracking right through to A/D...
Riders on the storm..............
Ride the gain control!!! Automatic compression with knob twiddling. Seriously, this was done a lot in the past, especially Motown (from what I've read). If you have recorded a few passes you quickly know when the singer is going to start belting it out, so I...
You are right. You do have all the basics covered. However, $200 won't get you much better than the preamps in the Mackie VLZ, regardless of the hype. I think you'll be wasting your money to buy another preamp. Perhaps go for the RNC? I've never used this thing, but from what I've heard you...
Dbx 266XL is not a good choice
This compressor will start popping and clicking on bass frequencies. Really disconcerting - it's passable on vocals and acoustic guitar, but save your money and buy something more reliable.
Dbx 266XL not great....
I have used the 266XL for some time & though it is fine as an 'entry level' compressor I quickly moved on to better things. It is OK on acoustic guitar & vocals but not so hot on bass guitar - lots of pops & clicks which I couldn't hear at first, but eventually became...
Mixerman gets my vote!
This guy is an incredible writer.
Leaving aside the moral debate about drugs (I'm a non-smoking teetotal vegetarian, but who cares?) Mixerman's instalments from the studio are breathtakingly hilarious.
This boy sure knows how to write a story and what a story it is. I...
Sennheiser MD 421 is the usual approach...
Set the mic to "m", point it at the floor tom & you're sorted. If you wanted a cheaper option you could go for another sm57, which would also do a decent job.
Same shit different day.........
Yep, had the same problem. I'm now waiting for a new VC1QD. Will let you know how it works out, but I don't feel too good about this one.........
Portable workstation is best for newbies like me!
I started out with an old cassette 4 track a few years ago which TOOK ME AGES TO LEARN!! But now that I have grown comfortable with mulit-track recording I have progressed to the Akai DPS 12i & now the Akai DPS16.
Deep down I know that PC/Mac...
I also had a humming twin Qcs.....
But in my case there was definitely a problem with the joemeek, the humming was just in one channel. I also had a factory fitted digital out which I eventually discovered was humming too!
Having sent it away to be fixed (under guarantee) the Twin Qcs has bee...
Who really bothers about phase??
Seriously, there's no point in paying too much attention to these things. A friend of mine who has produced a number of commercial albums for the UK market didn't know about phase stuff for years. He had the mics on top & under the snare (virtually pointing at...
Behringer has some good & bad
I have been using a Behringer Eurorack mixer for the past year (which was borrowed) going into my Akai DPS12i. I naively thought thought that the pre's on the Behringer would be better, but when I did some sound tests months later I just couldn't tell the...
I'm a drummer. I'm definitely anal (but who isn't on a forum like this?) and I love to be organised!!!!
I had to leave my last band because I couldn't put up with wasting my time with a bunch of slackers who took endless cigarette breaks, didn't do their homework and weren't as wired as...
V-amp rules!!!!!!!!!!!!
Having recently purchased a Behringer V-amp2 I am more than satisfied with this new thing. I couldn't believe how much I got for the price! Gig bag, footswitch, wow!
This is NOT a noisy machine. Far from it. And having heard the Pod & J-station I can honestly say that...
What about the Sennheiser MD421?
Maybe someone else can come in on this one, but I've read that the Sennheiser MD 421 (often used on toms) is a good mic for speech. I've borrowed one recently and though I haven't used it for speech it has an 'S' setting which is specifically for this purpose.
Give 'em away!!!!!!!!!
No seriously.......not many people want to shell out money for semi-pro DIY music. Why should they? Most of the music I've listened to by amateurs really sucks (and i include some of my own stuff in that category) but the last people to realise this are the bands...
and the answer is......GEORGE HARRISON!!
Lennon & McCartney take all the honours, but the late great George Harrison has to be my favourite underrated guitarist. As someone else has mentioned he was certainly not unknown, but he was often overlooked. He helped craft that essential Beatle sound...
It's got to be a.............................Plextor!
I was asking this question some months ago on another forum, and I'm only giving you the overwhelming advice that I have received. So I bought a Plextor (scsi external, not cheap mind) which is just brilliant. Very good quality - when I make...
Ignore the cheapskates
If you are going to do this properly then don't mess around with boxes that compress the data, or stay in cheap analogue hell. The price of digital gear is coming down all the time. Once I ditched my 4 track recorder for a decent digital recorder I never looked back...
