I use them. Kinda cheesy for what you pay. Just a picture quality grayscale on that same old gold-ish CD-R. Kinda cool, but the CD's cost too much. Also, they are a bit thicker, and will not play on all cd players. FWIW.

Hobby stuff will never equal sounding good and pro. You can try and try, but experienced ears will always know. If you are just screwing around, get cheap ones. If money is burning a hole in your pocket, invest it.

hiss = mic you can either try to scrub it out with some noise filters, or some clever eq, but having no experience with "USB" mics, i would be leery at best. All I can tell you is that the sound comes from your mic, or the "pre" which in this case is a USB interface. Think I would look there...
