    "Old School" Punk Rock

Haha, at the risk of sounding like a complete idiot, most of the old-skool punk sounds were more a matter of bands using what they had. I'm using a REALLY bad setup on my drums now (sm58 on kick, some cheap dynamic on snare, v67 as an overhead) because my usual mics aren't available and I'm...

Looking to Ditch my DAW - Need Advice

Alright folks, here's the deal. I'm an aspiring musician/engineer/producer/yadda yadda yadda. Currently I'm recording all my stuff on a Zoom MRS-1044 10 track DAW, and then using an optical cable to mix it down to my PC where I edit it with Goldwave. This is, in my opinion, very inefficient...

    Lost My Sm57 $*#^

Don't feel bad man, I lost mine too. :( Last August actually.. I left it at a gig and when I went back it wasn't there. Fucking thieves. I'm saving up to buy another now.. I bought a couple other mics in the meantime. :)

Isn't a great dynamic mic more practical for homerec'der?

Every studio is going to have some kind of bottleneck.. nothing's ever perfect. That being said, try out a good quality LDC.. you'll fall in love. Half the fun of home recording is getting everything to sound good.. don't limit yourself.

need preamp for acoustic, vocals + DI box for electric

I'm gonna go with the flow here and agree on the DMP3. It's definitely quite the piece of gear for the price, and you can get em on Ebay now for less than 150 bucks. Hell they're so cheap I'd buy 2. :D I've got one and it definitely hasn't disappointed me.

    SM57 decent for spoken word?

It's not the best for spoken word, but with a little EQ you should be fine. For versatility you can't go wrong though.. you can use that thing on practically anything you can think of and get a semi-decent sound. It's definitely a jack of all trades. Oh and look into getting/making a windscreen...

Best tracking headphones for under $50

AKG K-66s are around 30 bucks and would do you nicely. There's a LITTLE bit of bleed from them but not much.

    An arsenal of dynamics!!!

Dynamics eh? I'd definitely get a 421 and SM7 from the mics you listed. Don't overlook the E609 Silver either. I'd also look into some of those crazy SPL-handling kick mics like the Beta 52 and the AKG D112.

Well.. at least he killed hair metal. :)

    DOD Death Metal Distortion

I had one and sold it, it's REALLY noisy, the gain is 100% at all times and it sucks batteries like crazy. I'll admit it IS fun to play around with, especially if you have a soft spot for tuned-down riffing, but it's not really usable, studio or otherwise. The 3-band EQ on the pedal is cool...

    newb :( preamps?

I'd recommend the M-Audio DMP3. You can pick it up now for 160 US on EBay or Music123 and it's a solid piece of gear for the price.

    ZOOM Mrs-1044 USB

As far as I know the MRS-1044 uses FAT32. I own one but haven't gotten around to buying the USB interface.. I already own a S/PDIF cable that I use for mixing down to the computer so I don't really see the need for it, especially at like $80 US. Using the interface and the software on the ZOOM...

    best vocal mic ?

HAHAHA. :D Seriously.. if I were playing live a lot I'd pick up a SM-58.. if I wanted something serious for recording I'd look into maybe an MXL V67G or a Studio Projects C1.

    md 421 or sm 57?

SM-57s are cheaper and provide a nice raunchy sound on amps. 421s are more expensive and give an arguably more balanced sound. Can't fault 57s though, they're an industry standard for a reason. Oh, and what's the big deal about buying on Ebay? It saves cash, and if the mic is faulty, you can...

    Shure PG57???

Meh.. not much point.. it'd be like getting an SM48 instead of an SM58. Sure, if you wanna save 30 or 40 bucks, or whatever the cost difference is.. but you're gonna regret not saving those extra pennies.

Members average number of mics and a list...

    (1) Shure SM-57 ($70 US Used) (1) Shure SM-58 ($80 US Used) (1) Vtech VT-1030 ($40 Canadian new with XLR to 1/4" cable used, REALLY good mic for the money, nice and sturdy for live applications) Hey, what can I say, I'm just getting started. :-) Next up is an AKG D112, then a decent condenser...

Amplifying 12 string guitar for live use.

I bought a Shadow a few months back for the hell of it.. HORRIBLE, completely horrible. Very harsh sounding pickup, sold it for a quarter of what I bought it for.

    Guitar amp micing question

Can't really go wrong with a SM-57, I've been using em ever since I started recording. Don't be afraid to experiment though!
