    Mic on Guitar Cab Selection?

You're gonna get a lot of "DURR BUY A 57" responses here, but I suggest you look beyond that. The thing is tried and true and has been a part of countless great recorded guitar sounds, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. I actually like a large condenser a few feet out from the amp to pick up...

    Bleedover, tips anyone?

You might wanna try using mics with tighter pickup patterns. You didn't really state what you were using in particular, but for this purpose you're gonna want to use directional mics as often as possible. In addition, I'd suggest using a noise gate on your drums, toms and kick especially (you...

    First-time Pre Suggestions?

I can only vouch for what I know, own and use. That being said, I'd definitely look into the M-Audio DMP3. 2 channels of clean, high gain mic pre that can be had for less than a hundred bucks if you keep hunting eBay and exercise some patience. I own a couple of em and have no regrets. That...

"That Mic was On?!"...Major Label Mistakes

There's this one part on St Anger by Metallica where someone makes noise or something for 70-odd minutes. :D Seriously, that album is (intentionally) full of record-o-crap. (did I just coin a new term?) I'll point to the snare rattle during the intro of Some Kind of Monster as the most...

Chairs... Not sure where to post this...

I use an old wooden chair that's stiff as hell and hurts my arse. I'm currently taking up donations for a new office chair. Or a pillow, either or.

Mic Cables for Recording - NEED HELP!!

I've heard lots of good things about Blue Kiwi cables, but they're definitely gonna cost a bit more. I think you should be fairly safe as long as you dont go completely cheap and pay like a buck each for em at Radio Shack or something. Alternatively, if you have a bit of skill with soldering...

    Pepsi Challenge - MXL603s vs. Octava 012

Wow.. I was really surprised by this one, especially given the Oktava's reputation as a "dark" mic. I've actually been trying to decide between a pair of these two mics as my next purchase so this is an awesome thread. hawk, can you possibly look into Pepsi-challenging these two on some...

    open or closed headphones?

I'd accept the cold, hard truth, spend a few bucks on a set of MoreMe's or Extreme Isolation headphones for tracking, and save the rest for a decent set of monitors.

    Critique This Song!!!

Hey guys, I just wrote a song and I was hoping to improve my skills as a songwriter a bit by getting some constructive opinions. So lemme know what you think.. this is only a rough demo so I didn't pay too much attention to making everything perfect recording-or-performance-wise, audiophiles and...

Mic Shootout Results: AKG C414, MXL 603s, Shure SM7, AT-822

Hmm.. 1) MXL603 - Nice and balanced, low noise floor, my favorite. 2) 414B-ULS - Also like this one.. it had a bit less definition though.. would still not hesitate to try it out. 3) SM-7 - Had a nice lo-fi sound to it, but I'd never use it. This isn't really a good acoustic mic anyways. 4)...

    live vocal condenser

At my school we've used an AKG 535 a lot for singers that want a live condenser.. it usually sounds pretty good on most voices.

    Live Vocal Mic.

The plain ol' SM58 is a great time-tested live vocal mic.. just choose one that suits your voice well.

Who's cheap gear do you trust the most?

Out of all the brands mentioned here, I'd probably go with Alto, as I've got one of their mixers and it works great. I hate Peavey though, their products always seem to crap out on me. Not a lot of experience with the rest of these brands (I'm fairly new to the recording game). M-Audio really...

Blisters: How do YOU deal with them?

I don't really play drums that often, but when I do I sometimes get a blister on the side of my index finger. It's mostly when I use my drummer's dipped stick, the rubber on them chafes my finger. Not a big deal though, it's kinda calloused now, and if it gets really bad I just stop for a bit.

    Recording Distortion

Ok, where do I start.. I don't claim to be an expert at this stuff but I should be able to help you out a bit here. First of all, I'd try the SM-57 on the amp.. that should be common sense unless you're REALLY new to this. Don't worry TOO much about the room sound yet, you'll be close miking...

    problem holding my axe

I can't really tell you much other than to practice more standing up. Remember that in a live setting you will be playing standing up around 95% of the time.. adjust your habits accordingly, proficiency will come with time. Oh, and get a comfortable, adjustable strap, and think about investing...

    Zoom MRS 1044

God help your soul, I can't wait to get rid of mine. But yeah, it depends on if your monitors or active or passive. I don't know what model you're planning on getting.. if they're passive you need a power amp. You plug the RCA outs from the MRS-1044 into the power amp, and plug the power amp...

    Rap Vocals??

V67G for rap vocals? Wow.. I've got one and that's the last application I'd consider for it. The rather pronounced proximity effect would be kinda nice though, come to think of it. Do you have any sound clips or anything? I'd still prefer a darker mic though.
