    It's So Sad

Nice feel to it Emeric. A bit reminiscent of Supertramp (probably the vocal harmonies). I like the open tuned acoustic gits. To my ears spectral balance including bass is fine. Congrats!

Good Article on Home Studio Construction

Exactly. That's why I stopped buying it about five years ago. But this one just caught my eye. This info is not easy to come by in my experience...

    what!! no monitors?dream on....................

Mix on headphones if you plan to have everyone who ever listens to it use headphones as well. Otherwise monitor speakers are 100% essential. Headphones are too close to the ear to give an accurate rendering of the sound, as already suggested.

    Dolby question?

I turn Dolby off everything (other than my reel to reel 8-track). It's so inconsistent from one player to another that you inevitably have problems at the high end or end up with pumping and breathing (not that that's bad, but you don't want it on tape). ;>

    what!! no monitors?dream on....................

The problem with headphones is an artificial sense of stereo depth (no interaural crosstalk) and, in my experience, rapid listening fatigue. And I use pro phones. But if there are pros who say otherwise, I'm interested to learn more about how to do this as it would be a bonus especially for...

    What are sweepable mids?

Think about your stereo and the tone controls. One is for bass, the other for treble. You know what those do. Picture a third control between the two that adds or subtracts from the midrange tones of the music rather than highs or lows, depending on whether you turned it up or down. That would...

    SM 58 can be a SM57???

Krystof is quite correct; we went through this a few months ago if you'd like to search it.

    BRUTAL Distortion

If you want a very credible balls-to-the-wall overdrive, the Boss Metal Zone is probably your ticket. Just try it out at your local music store. You can probably get one used (maybe ebay) for under $100. Not all of us can afford a range of guitar amps...

    Tapehead goes digital...sort of

Well I actually got to play with a VS1680 over the last few days. My neighbor has temporary use of one so we played with it and actually got a pretty decent result out of it. We'll post it up here in the next week or two and of course would welcome feedback. But lordy the thing is not clear to...

    dumping inapplicable frequencies

I'd agree with Sonusman--you can't mix well until you've learned to listen and understand the music, and have a vision for what you're trying to accomplish. Recording school can teach you the science, but you need experience to understand the art. It's like painting, poetry, whatever. No matter...

    dumping inapplicable frequencies

Some of the confusion about guitar tonal ranges is that guitar notation is written an octave higher than it actually plays. Otherwise you'd have to write guitar music at the high end of the bass clef.

    Favorite EQ settings?

Can you hear a boost at 16 kHz? That's gettin' pretty high up there. Anyhow, I would stay away from "favorite" frequencies. If you start boosting and cutting all your channels at around the same frequencies, your whole mix will come out sounding skewed. What is the most important feature about...

    dented frets

I've had a number of fret dressings done to my guitars with no noticeable loss of fret area. If it's done professionally the shape and feel of the fret shouldn't change; it only goes a tiny bit lower. Most guitars can handle several fret dressings before the playability starts to suffer. At...

    acoustic guitar

Yeah Keaggy! What a player. He actually uses a combination (in studio) of built-in pickups and external microphones and blends the two. You can do this quite easily--just mic your guitar into one track and the pickup signal into the other. When you mix the two, pan, eq and effect them properly...

I sing like a dying pig in the heat of a miscarriage, HELP ME!!!

Great question--good to see some discussion about actually creating music! I'm not an expert on singing but I can share my own experience, having been down a similar path. Try this--pick up some instrument you've never played before--let's say a violin or a trumpet. Try to play it. That's...

    Worlds Worst Guitar!

A 3/4 size Romanian Degas acoustic. I bought it for my daughter as I thought it would be a good cheap starter guitar. It had a wider neck and low action in spite of its horrendous sound. Good for starters. But then a few months later the neck began to lift--actually the heel started separating...
