    Getting that punch

I used 2 overheads, kick, and snare mics. Should I focus on treating the kick and snare rather than the whole bus?

    Getting that punch

Yeah, it's punchy to begin with. I'll try the 2 compressor idea. I have only used 3-4 compressors enough to get to know them, but I have found The Rocket compressor to be SUPER fast. I'm sure it's capable of dialing a slow enough setting to work though. ...I hope.

    Getting that punch

When you guys approach a project where the drum transient peaks need to be tamed but the song still requires punch (in this case it's a rock song similar to what you might hear from Pearl Jam or Nirvana) how do you treat it? I just purchased The Rocket compressor and I like the color it gives...

    Hardware compression or plug in?

Bouldersoundguy - When you record 2 tracks of the guitar, what is your setup? Do you use a signal splitter of some kind? MassiveMaster- Thanks for the advice, I'll try to leave the multi band alone, but I do like to play with stuff :listeningmusic: May I ask why you don't advocate multi band...

    Hardware compression or plug in?

Thanks. I have both heard that different compressors will affect the same source in multiple ways and I've also heard it myself. I know this will come across lazy but the reason I asked was because I am in the middle of moving and also have a rough deadline to finish this master in the not too...

    Hardware compression or plug in?

I am trying my first mastering project and I'm using Studio One Pro to complete a CD that my band recently recorded. I know that some people love hardware compressors and processors and some people think they can get by just fine without them, what are the pros and cons of using hardware vs...

Sounds good on my DAW, terrible after burning to CD

Massive Master- Good suggestion, but yes it does sound trashy through the same system. PTravel- Thanks for the clarification on the workings of a CD. That's kind of how I assumed they worked. Update- I burned the master again without changing any of the project settings since the last time...

Sounds good on my DAW, terrible after burning to CD

Good point, I will do that now. I will try everything because the answer is probably something very simple. Having said that, I have heard on many occasions what it sounds like to have an imbalanced mix, and I don't think that is what I'm dealing with here because the sound quality itself is...

Sounds good on my DAW, terrible after burning to CD

I've been having this issue and it's really got me scratching my head. When I listen to the master on my DAW (studio one pro) the audio sounds good, when I burn it to a CD and play it on other systems and speakers it sounds noticeably worse. The sound isn't like a mix that translates badly to...

Thanks for the replies, especially on the clipping and track levels during the different stages. It helps a lot!

    Mixing to Mastering Questions

I am producing an album through every stage in the process, recording, mixing & mastering of the band I'm in. It just sounded like a fun project to try, and it really has turned out to be a blast. We are a jammy, funky, bluesy band and we don't really have a large fan-base but we thought it...

    Mastering clipping & multiband thresholds

Quick questions on clipping and levels. 1. At the mix stage, is it equally OK to have no clipping occurring but the peaks come very close to peaking + or - 1 db? Or even though it's not clipping is it better to have the clips a few db shy of clipping? (Also, in the mix stage does it matter if...

    How are the GarageBand plug-ins?

That's good to know! I know it sounds like a dumb question, "are they good" because I have them at my disposal, I should just be able to listen to them right? Well, that is true, but I feel that there is more to it in my situation. I am nearing the end of mixing an album and have used the Studio...

    How are the GarageBand plug-ins?

I use Studio One Professional and I always use the plug-ins that were either bundled with the program when I got it or came with an upgrade. However, every time I go to use a Studio One plug-in I always see the "other ones" sitting there. Studio One allows third party plug-ins so it...

Mixing: should I be using my interface?

I have a year old mac, I'm not sure how to route the audio there for programs outside of the daw yet. I guess I'll try to figure it out even though I don't hear that my mac sounds any worse than the firestudio.

Mixing: should I be using my interface?

I am using a firewire connected Presonus-Firestudio. Not sure about the loopback function you speak of, I'll look into that right now. Can you elaborate more on this loopback function? Thanks

Mixing: should I be using my interface?

When I am mixing, eqing, editing songs, all that good stuff, is there going to be a difference between just using the headphone out jack on my computer to go DAW->MONITORS rather than going DAW->INTERFACE->MONITORS? If there is no difference I would prefer going DAW->MONITORS because then if...

    Parallel Drum Compression

Are there any values for eq tweakings on the compressed drums that have been known to be useful that you know of? Kind of like how it's common to hear that overhead tracks benefit from a little cutting in 300-600 area. I know whatever sounds good sounds good, but sometimes when you get into...

    Parallel Drum Compression

I didn't use room mics on any of my recordings, usually just kick snare and overheads (some songs had Tom mics too). Also, because the compressor I use has a mix % knob, I use that to dial in how much compression I want blended with the 'dry' drums, so I can't eq the compressed drums as far as I...
