Can anyone suggest a 1” tape brand/type NEW for Tascam m-3500 plus MS-16?

I went from “I can put a cassette in the machine and hit record, how hard can multitrack tape recording be?” to “now I know why these guys are called engineers” and I’m sweating… I’m learning more than I realized there was to know!! I only hope I can respectfully carry a torch to the younger...

Tascam M-3500 mooing like a cow, failing caps?

It’s the craziest thing, I cannot get it to do the moo anymore, but here’s a vid of the meter behavior: I’m turning everything on at once via a Furman power conditioner. My scope is a Hitachi VC-5430 color lcd digital oscilloscope.

Can anyone suggest a 1” tape brand/type NEW for Tascam m-3500 plus MS-16?

I modified all the amp cards of the MS16 to be 15ips EQ instead of 30ips. I used the mod someone posted on here. The author of that mod said it increases the available bias(?) as well.

Can anyone suggest a 1” tape brand/type NEW for Tascam m-3500 plus MS-16?

Wow, that’s good to know about over driving tape. Maybe I’ll keep an old reel around if I want that effect on a track. Right now I’ll be mixing through my Tascam and sending the master buss into my DAW. I have an Otari Mx-5050 that I can do mixes to tape with but I’ll probably only use that...

Can anyone suggest a 1” tape brand/type NEW for Tascam m-3500 plus MS-16?

I saw a post from SweetBeats the legend about how it’s not as simple as “pick the highest gain tape.” I thought I might get some great suggestions here. I’m looking at the ATR 1” Master tape on the blue reel. My use will be in a home studio. I plan to reuse the same reel or two reels over...

Tascam M-3500 mooing like a cow, failing caps?

The problem was happening before and after I replaced the largest 5-6 caps in the power supply, no change. I have a good digital scope but I’m still learning how to use it. Where do I connect the negative lead? Then I just test each separate positive wire going to the mixer, using the...

Tascam M-3500 mooing like a cow, failing caps?

I’m trying this right now. It’s not the same sound, more like a combination of high frequency buzz and some low frequency buzz. Low frequency feedback is a good description for this sound that’s happening, it’s actually 120 hz noise I replaced the very large 20,000 uF caps in the power...

Tascam M-3500 mooing like a cow, failing caps?

Strange problem. And I don’t live near a farm. When I power up the mixer it’s most pronounced even with every knob/fader down. There’s a humming-mooing sound that fades after five seconds. I notice it also sometimes in any channel when there’s a percussive sound. There’s a “woooo” hum...

One Tascam 244 preamp WAYYY too much gain, troubleshooting SOLVED

That’s why my master channel overload LEDs are lighting, because I’m using way too loud of a test tone. Thanks for all your help, Sweetbeats.

One Tascam 244 preamp WAYYY too much gain, troubleshooting SOLVED

There’s the overload LEDs at the master fader, and the ones at each channels trim pot. Only the master fader LEDs are lighting up. I’m honestly probably not supposed to be using a 0dB signal to calibrate the VU meters, that’s probably why I’m lighting those. But there’s no distortion. I wish...

One Tascam 244 preamp WAYYY too much gain, troubleshooting SOLVED

Final update: problem solved. The contact for the calibration trim pot was bent up and totally away from the surface it glides against. I removed that circuit board, used a tweezers to bend the metal back into place, using a multimeter to test that it was working, and reinstalled. I can now...

One Tascam 244 preamp WAYYY too much gain, troubleshooting SOLVED

The signal through channel 2 is not distorted in any outputs or on tape. Sorry for all the sudden information, you started me thinking about this in a different way and I thought I should post these observations. That VU calibration trim pot is not affecting the VU sensitivity at all. This...

One Tascam 244 preamp WAYYY too much gain, troubleshooting SOLVED

Update: if I lower the fader until the VU meter says 0, I still can’t get the VU meter to move with the VU calibration trim pot. My trim pot is not working. Interesting.

One Tascam 244 preamp WAYYY too much gain, troubleshooting SOLVED

Could it be that the circuit that adjusts VU meter sensitivity is messed up? The 1khz tone is not distorting despite the meter being way in the red. The master overload LED is lit, but it’s lit for each channel with that test tone. The trimmer overload LED is not lit. Seems like the...

One Tascam 244 preamp WAYYY too much gain, troubleshooting SOLVED

When I remove the jumper, VU goes to no signal, no overload LED. Then if I take the Send signal and inject into channel 1, I get a normal VU level in channel 1, and the tone sounds good-no distortion on headphones. It’s also interesting that the overload LED for the trim pot comes on at the...

One Tascam 244 preamp WAYYY too much gain, troubleshooting SOLVED

Has anyone encountered this problem? I’m setting the VU level calibration and putting a 1,000hz tone into each channel. Channel 2 is slammed in the red no matter what I do with the preamp trim pot. (Clipping LED is lit too) I can’t even get it to go down with the VU calibration trimmer. It...

How to extend the high frequency response of an Ampeg 810E.

Ampeg all-tube SVT amps sound great to me. I recently grabbed an 810E from 1980 to go with my SVT 2 Pro. I noticed that with all the EQ set to 12oclock on my amp, it sounds like my tone knob is rolled back, with my bass. Then I found out this cab has a low pass filter that starts at 5khz...

Scored some Event 20/20 bas monitors! Are the 1/4” monitor outs of TASCAM M320b balanced?

I don’t think there’s an issue with unbalanced unless the cable is prone to noise or long lengths. I just wanted to get balanced cables if that was an option because I guess they’re superior.
