thanks! yeah, i agree with you on that. it’s also tricky with some of these songs because on noise, and 2 more which aren’t posted, the guitar solo is located on the vocal tracks and the vocals use HEAVY eq from the tascam to make them fit so well in the mix. so it’s about doing a little...

as for that mac demarco guy, i should also state that i actually have much of his gear too. i have the same guitar he used back in the day for this impeccable lofi noise project, i have the same microphone used on his “2” LP (a roland dr80c condenser microphone), and i employ the same alesis...

i began recording on my literal iphone mic and bandlab (garage band equivalent) in january of 2024. fast forward to april of 2024, and i began using a tascam 244 to record EXTREMELY CRAPPY stuff. i was recording terrible levels, using terrible eq to tape and mixing with headphones on...

thanks! it’s really nice to get opinions about my recordings from people who actually record using analog tape, i genuinely don’t think i have gotten feedback from anyone who has before. most people in my music scene and bands we play with live (yes, i’ve assembled a band of friends to play my...

thank you! the work you’re hearing is a product of dbx NR, a focusrite isa one preamp, a single condenser mic for every source (yes, drums are a single mic on those song) and a liberal use of double tracking guitar and vocals. stereo imaging is probably my favorite thing about songs and...

hey y’all! here i present two songs: both are recorded on a tascam 38, and mixed using a tascam m512 mixer. absolutely all done out of the box, using an alesis micro limiter and effects are printed to tape only, no effects sends. these are rough mixes, as i didn’t use the BEST quality patch...

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

i’ll analyze this more later, but i do wanna mention that i’ve HAD the machine since july 2024, but i didn’t load up tape and begin recording anything until Christmas time of 2024. also, i bought a NOS empty ampex precision reel (6 screws, plastic ring around the hub) last night for my...

minimum loss patching for a tascam m512 mixer

okay so…. think i just answered my own post while researching. as expected, the resident expert in all things tascam M series related once again teaches me valuable information.

minimum loss patching for a tascam m512 mixer

hey y’all, posting again. i’m about a week away from entering the mix-down phase of an album i’ve recorded at home. since i used an outboard preamp to record, the tascam m512 has had no input on the recorded tapes and so i feel as though i want to completely go crazy with digitizing the best...

and here’s a more detailed look at the heads.

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

alright here’s the video: video so it seems that the far end of the shaft is getting the majority of the oxide, at least according to this single test, which is interesting to me. also, i say “a few minutes” but time flew by and it was probably more like 30 minutes, plus however long the last...

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

i’ll take some more detailed pictures tonight. also, since i’m a one man band who needs to overdub his own crap and is very picky about how good he plays (imagine asking a bandmate to overdub a part like 5 times without annoying him, meanwhile i could do it all day), i feel like i’ve been very...

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

will do. i’ve been away from home for the majority of this conversation, but im going to run some tape tonight and i’ll take a video of what the cleaning process yields. as an aside, do the bottoms of the lifters show wear? you mentioned they are unable to be rotated, and if memory serves, they...

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

i usually run it up and down the shaft (again, har har) so i’ve never explicitly seen where most of it is. though i always make sure to rub good against where the tape would be recording 7 and 8.

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

as per the seller, i’m using 3M ATR master tape. it was manufactured in either 2022 or 2023. he told me upon buying the machine in person, “never use anything other than ATR master tape with this one.” heres the story with the unit: it was bought by a sort of barn studio in PA in the 1980s...

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

i’m not at home right now, but a month or so ago i took some detailed pictures of my tape heads. unfortunately i didn’t get a pic of the lifters, which i'm assuming should be examined from where they contact the bottom of the tape.

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

that little pin roller (not the guide, but the thing next to the guide) to the right-hand side of the repro head is what i’m referring to. i had a feeling i was calling it the wrong name. but i’m pretty sure it’s always running along the shiny side of the tape, helping out the pinch roller move...

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

interestingly, the vast majority of oxide buildup occurs on the flywheel. i’ll run the tape to a gap between songs, take the tape out of the transport and run an alcohol coated foam tape head cleaner against the flywheel and it’ll pick up quite a bit of brown. the heads themselves however have...

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

hey y’all! i’ve been using my tascam 38 (which came to me virtually unused by its original owner, it was serviced and calibrated for ATR master tape and i’ve been using it that way with dbx since january) to record a 30 minute album and i’ve been wondering about the machines mortality with some...

volume from console or output of limiter?

hey y’all. i got an odd question for ya: so i’m almost done with my album, and i need to think about how to mix this beast down and digitize it. i run my tape tracks through a tascam m512, and the stereo L and R go through an alesis micro limiter and into an interface. there are 2 ways i can...
