Wow and flutter towards end of reel?

Hey all - I'm experiencing issues with my Nagra IV-S. Sounds great until the last few minutes of a reel, then I hear some speed fluctuation. I'm probably going to just pack it up and send it to Trew Audio or something, but I thought I would check here first. Maybe just a belt or a tension...

    Turntable stuff: Test tone discs?

Anyone know a source for a disc with test tones to calibrate/test a turntable?

Level dropping slightly on one channel

Hey folks. One of my Tascam 22's is having some issues. The left channel level is fluctuating by a db or two. It will dip slightly every so often. I ran some tones and checked that I was feeding it constant voltage (and the problem was not any of the gear passing signal to it), and I...

Future of analog gear used prices

Sweetbeat's thread about having a lot of gear made me wonder about its investment value (or lack of). There is a finite amount of gear, so supply can only diminish. That's good for those of us holding gear. The other side is demand. Will demand hold steady enough, or at least decline at a...

Tape machine actually increasing dynamic range?

I mentioned that I purchased a Nagra IV-S. I'm running it through a bunch of tests and getting familliar with it. Play around with different tapes, speeds, etc. I record a tune from a digital file into it and record the repro head back to digital and compare the files. The digital file peaks...

    Any Nagra users here?

I am waiting for delivery on a Nagra IV-S I purchased. Looking forward to it. I like going direct to stereo when I can, and I only do remote recording. I've been wanting a Nagra for a long time. I finally decided to pull the trigger. It's going to be a couple of weeks before I get it and...

Tascam 244 Issue - Maybe the DBX?

After loving on my 244 in another thread, it started acting up. Intermittently, it will sound like a compressor is pumping the audio. I think it only affects playback - in other words, it is not printing to tape like that. It does it on all channels, but at different times so you get this...

Slow rewind, some noise on Tascam 22

Hey folks. My 22-2 had been working great for a while now. Now it has been slowing down in rewind. FF and play are all fine. The left reel wobbles more than it used to. Makes a slight squeal sometimes. No signs of sticky tape. Belts are no more than a year old or so. Thoughts?:)

How not to thread the tape...

Anyone want to fix up a 244?

I have a Tascam 244 that I picked up even though it was kind of rough. It looks like it sat for a while uncovered. Under the tape door looks clean - even the heads appear clean. The outside is full of dust and the plastic seems faded in spots. It would take some elbow grease to clean it up...

Can you transfer tape from 10.5" to 7" reels?

Any easy way to do that if you don't have a machine that can load a 10.5" reel?

    Turntable distortion

Just picked up a turntable for the first time in almost 20 years. It is used, but good shape. I am getting a significant amount of distortion. I don't think an untrained ear would hear it so much, but it's pretty bad in my mind. What is the likely culprit? Is that indicate a worn stylus...

Best way to nudge tracks in analog

What is the most cost-effective bit of gear to get if you need to add a couple milliseconds of delay to a track without affecting the quality? When I mix spot mics into a stereo pair I need to delay them a bit. ITB, I use UAD's Little Labs IBP. I don't need to adjust phase though, just delay.

    1 mil tapes...(Tascam 22 content)

Is LPR35 the only sticky-safe 1 mil tape right now? I scored a like-new 22-4. I've been using LPR35 on my 22-2 and it's been fine. (It sounds a little hissy on my 22-4 compared to the 22-2. I demag'd and it got much better, but not quite as good as the 22-2. Perhaps the more narrow tracks...

    Scored a like-new 22-4

Bought off Ebay for a BIN of $150. The seller said it had about 10 hours of use total. Probably not far from the truth. It has one scratch, but other than that it is very clean. Put an MRL test tape on and it's response was excellent. +/- no more than 2db from 32hz to 16khz on playback...

Reversing Phase on unbal. line (for mid side)

Quick question, Suppose I like to record M/S, and I want to print to tape before I convert to M/S (mid mic on one channel, side on another, then copy side channel and flip phase during mix down). Doing this keeps the ability to adjust the MS without using up a third track. Using my Tascam...

Couple of 424MKIII Questions, DBX info

I just read in the manual that sub-sonic information can cause modulation of the program material during quiet passages. I tend to use mics that have no problems picking up low end (Avenson omnis, Sennheiser MKH's, which are almost flat down to 20hz). Am I going to have issues? What does the...

    Bought a new machine...

After owning an Alesis HD24, Edirol R4, and two Edirol R44's (still have those), and two Tascam 22's (still have those too), I bought... A Tascam 424 Mk3. I kept going back to a recording I did on a Yamaha 4-track about 6 years ago. Everytime I compared a digital recording to it, I found...

    Any 4-track cassette 3-heads?

If I track to a cassette four track, I'd like to take the output from tape on the same pass and immediately dump it to digital on separate tracks and mix ITB. I have no need for overdubs - this is live jazz. (This is stuff that will end up on CD anyway - it has to go digital at some point)...

The new Oktava fig. 8 adapter

I've always loved Oktava mics even though I have moved to some more expensive gear. I do use figure 8 mics for mid-side and occaisionally Blumlein. Can anyone take a look and help me understand if this could work? http://oktava.com/inc/sdetail/2445 There has to be an inch or two of space...
