Tascam M 520 direct out issue

(Here’s some of my background for context) I had never recorded in a professional studio until 2021. My band at the time cut a record to 2inch tape and the engineer made it seem so effortless Leaving that experience i was really inspired so I bought this console for $100 about two and a half...

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

thanks again for the information! SO I'm having trouble sourcing all nichicon brand capacitors and their associated values for the 10 smaller capacitors in the PSU. Is it a problem to mix capacitor brands in this case? Also can I use a bi polar cap in any instance here? You guys are a plethora...

Squealing sounds more like it. But at those bass frequencies so like flubbing might be a better word lol. Becomes a more straight up tone when the frequency is shifted higher. But is correlated to boosting the gain. Which caps are limited to the eq section exclusively? I don’t mind recapping...

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

So I did the first 6 big caps and was successful. Accidentally tore off a solder eyelet pad and used a component lead into a teeny tiny circle with some flux and it was solid! Any dice on a replacement EQ pot? Manual says 10k (B) + 100k (E) This bass eq gain knob is causing some weird...

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

Hey guys, returning to this thread to say I finally cracked open the PSU and am going to start with the 6 big caps to begin with. Just ordered them. Also I wanted to note the ground strap lug and the associated nut was loose in the PSU housing!

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

So, a couple of questions I've been asking myself these past few weeks from my last post here. Regarding the general noise floor of the console, I've decided I should recap my power supply to see what my baseline for other channel repairs might be. I've never recapped any old electronics, but...

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

I ended up taking the apogee out the rack and removed the odd numbered jumper pins (1-16) on the DAC output card for “pin 2 hot unbalanced operation” I also added an air gap between the console PSU and apogee. This seemed to fix my input and output issues.

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

Yup you’re correct. It’s interesting to me that an interface from 20ish years ago, I couldn’t get all the required information even from the company directly. If it weren’t for that forum I never would’ve figured out this problem. Thanks for the help on this guys. All the information I can get...

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

Small update because I’ve been so busy. I removed the apogee from the rack and took out the accessory DAC output card. I removed the odd numbered shorting pins for “pin 2 hot unbalanced output” and reinstalled the card. (this solution I found in a forum on gearslutz) also this information I...

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

I’m just confused as to how the direct out is bleeding back a distorted harmonic into the fader when turned up yet no bus is assigned. But only when making a patch from the direct out

Thanks for taking the time to inform me about this stuff. Hm. So what do you suggest my options are, if you’re saying this extra cable is redundant?

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

I have my m520 direct outs on an unbalanced patch bay normalled to the line ins on my MSR 16. The input of my apogee AD8k is on a balanced patch bay with TRS (bay) to XLR. The output of the apogee is fully normalled to line inputs 12-20.

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

Interesting I have not tried this! But get this - my power supply has a 3 prong cable! So somebody must have modded it at some point? I have a morley hum eliminator that I use when recording stereo amps that I could use to try to incorporate your proposed solution but I know disconnecting the...

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

I will also say the apogee is sitting directly on top of the tascam psu in my rack. There is no grounding scheme or anything going on in my rack. I just have 4 patch bays (3 unbalanced tascams and one balanced nys) My furman conditioner, a midiverb, behringer 8 channel headphone amp, presonus...

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

Hey thanks for the response! I'm not sure how to go about bonding the chassis? What does this mean and how does it effect things? How would I bond them? I do have them plugged into the same furman power conditioner. I'm not sure if there's anything weird, all in all, I bought the console for...

Tascam M 520 direct out issue

Hey guys, a bit of a doozy here.... I have a tascam m520 and I'm trying to plug the direct out (out of a patchbay) to the input on an Apogee AD 8000 AD/DA convertor. Problem is that there is a slight distortion harmonic introduced to the signal in the background when making this patch happen, I...

Tascam m-520 aux monitor with HA8000

So for instance, guitar on channel four, aux 1 gain turned all the way up, aux set to pre fader, aux 1 master fader turned all the way up, aux out 1 to the headphone amp input and again everything turned all the way up. Very very faint signal from the headphone amp output. I know the headphone...

Yes I have the manual and have read the aux section. That’s what I’m saying haha, I thought it worked just like that. Those faders were all the way up. Everything on 11 (lol)
