MS-16 30 to 15ips conversion (or vice versa)

hey folks, i’m very late with the update, but i finally finished the mod a week or so ago. (many other projects) i recorded a full band last night, and it worked great. i haven’t touched any of the trim pots and i don’t think i will, because it sounds great. i don’t have a calibration tape, and...

EQ-ing HIFI speakers for a flatter response

I've had a pair of Polk Monitor 5A speakers for nearly 10 years, and I've found them to be great listening speakers - detailed highs and nice, fast low end, but suffer from the ubiquitous mid-range "suck" that so many HiFi speakers do. So, I had the idea to analyze their response and boost...

How can I use these cheap "RK87" capsules?

Well, my fears were confirmed; the capsule I was using was defective. If you remember from my previous post, I mentioned I ordered two of these capsules. So, I swapped them out and sure enough, one of them produces an unusably low output signal. Very unfortunate! I've contacted the seller to see...

How can I use these cheap "RK87" capsules?

Yep, I went with the direct connect mod as described in your thread, but no joy. No perceptible difference in the S/N or output. I did a comparison between my stock V63m, and there is a significant sensitivity discrepancy; ~15dB or so. But once again, the new capsule still sounds better. Really...

How can I use these cheap "RK87" capsules?

Thanks for recommending GroupDIY and providing the link to your thread! I have a lot of soldering to do today, so I will give these ideas a try and report back..

How can I use these cheap "RK87" capsules?

I recently purchased two of these. It looks like a u87 capsule, but it is a cardioid, single sided diaphragm with only two leads. I had hopes of popping these into a couple of MXL V63M microphones I had laying around, and I knew I had would have to contend with an extended HF response, but...

ITAM 1610: The coolest tape recorder I've ever owned (or seen!)

Sorry for creating two posts about the same machine, but while the previous thread was seeking data, I just want to share my experience with this *super cool* machine and how I came into it. From about 2015 to 2018 I recorded exclusively on my Tascam MS-16. I recorded a dozen or so records on...

Brand new reel of SM911... sticky shed?!

I'm leaning towards it being a bad batch of tape. I've never seen a tape dry shed like this. There was quite a bit of dust, but also a lot of very fine, wispy hair-like fibers that accumulated on the heads and tape path. Not the normal bit of residue you'd find after playing a new tape. I did a...

Brand new reel of SM911... sticky shed?!

Brand new. I don't even think this "brand" has been distributing tape for more than a few years.

Brand new reel of SM911... sticky shed?!

I recently purchased a 1"x2500' reel of SM911 (Recording the Masters brand) from Full Compass last week. I've had really great luck with Pyral and RMGI, but I don't see tape available from those folks anymore. I put the reel on my machine and it started squeaking instantly. After just a few...

    ITAM 1610 schematics?

jpmorris, thank you! I was able to find Barry's contact information without much trouble, so I'll share what (if anything) comes of it. The 1610 is not a terribly complicated piece of equipment. Backwards engineering schematics would not be difficult and is something I will consider once I've...

    ITAM 1610 schematics?

This is useful, thank you! Unfortunately it is lacking the schematic for the “master card”, which is what I’m looking for.. Do you know of other sites I could check that might have schematics that can’t be found with a google search? I’ve never heard of Electrotanya before, either..

    ITAM 1610 schematics?

In 2011 someone on this forum said they had schematics available, but it appears they made an account to make that one post and never logged on again... Maybe they will reappear!

    ITAM 1610 schematics?

Itam 1610 is a 1” 16 track tape recorder with a relatively small footprint. Itam went belly up in the 80’s, so there really is no one to reach out to that I know of. I would love to be proven wrong, though.

    ITAM 1610 schematics?

Hello folks. I recently acquired an Itam 1610 with auto locator remote in as close to “mint” condition as one could hope for. So far I’ve repaired the bias power supply and the transport is running great, but I’m having some issues chasing some electrical gremlins. Tracks won’t arm, and the...

MS-16 30 to 15ips conversion (or vice versa)

Sorry to revive a dead thread.. Long time MS-16 user here. I owned a 15ips model for years, (stupidly) sold it, and have just acquired a 30ips machine that has seen very little use. Probably would not have considered buying it otherwise, and the 30ips situation would have been an absolute deal...
