music as art and art as music

As an artist I admit that I spread myself pretty thin. I paint, sketch, I'm a photograher, a collage(r)?, a musician (guitar, bass, drums, cello, vocals), a songwriter, a sound guy, a writer, a lyricist.... I'm not trying to make myself look cool, honest, i couldnt do that if i tried. my point...

I need someone with trained ears

I'm trying to get somewhere close to the guitar sound at the end of this song: "The Pull" by The Microphones (skip to the 3/4th's point in the song and wait a second for the explosion of sound) I know i already posted this in recording techniques but no one would reply there... so i figured...

    Help me get this sound!

I've been trying for a week to get somewhere close to the distorted guitar sound at the end of this song: The Pull by The Microphones Skip ahead to about 3/4th's of the way through the song. and wait to hear the explosion of sound. I know that he's using a Kay hollowbody guitar, and i'm prety...

    1-bit d/a converters

I just looked at the manual of my (fairly crappy) stereo. I noticed for the first time that it said it has a "1-bit D/A Converter". 1 bit? what the f**k? is this normal? i mean... its bad but its not that bad...

    Reversing a phrase... w/ analog

as we all know, with digital recording it is very easy to reverse a phrase of a track. But how, if it is possible, is this done with reel to reel recorders? My guess was to cut out the section to be reversed and tape it back in backwards... but i have no idea if that would work or not.

    LX20 vs. XT20

Has anyone had any experience with both? How much difference is there really? I'm mostly interested in sound quality. I own an XT20 and am trying to decide whether to buy another XT20 to sync up with it for 16 tracks or if I should save a few bucks and get an LX20 if there's not that much...

Large monitors vs. small monitors w/ sub

I've heard different things on this and i just wanted to get a somewhat solid answer. Which is better for mixing, large monitors (say, anyhting 6" and over) without a sub, or small monitors (anything less than 6") with a sub?

    Cassette tape recorder

I'm looking for a good dual cassette tape recorder... I'm just starting to get my first recordings done and i cant afford a computer or a cd recorder, so i decided to release stuff on casette tapes and give it away for free, just to get my name out. I have a dual cassette recorder (i found it in...

    concrete floors

i record in an unfinished room, with cut out carpet lying on the floor on top of concrete. i know that for live sounding rooms, hard wood floors are best. Would concrete have the same effect? should i take out the carpeting? i dont mind the aesthetics of anything, as long as it sounds good.

Jim Peterik's studio - no dynamics?

I recently visited the home studio of Jim Peterik (the guy that wrote eye of the tiger, I'm a friend of a guy in his current band). The only reason i refer to it as a 'home' studio is because its in his home/mansion. The equipment was better than a lot of the stuff i've seen in top of the line...

    Do analog effects still exist?

I'm looking at all these reverb units to use with the auxiliary sends of my mixer, and theyre all digital, every single one. I dont want to have to make my signal go through crappy converters (because i'm low on budget i cant afford an effects unit with nice converters). So do analog ones still...

    Soundproofing Pipes

I record in an unfinished room in my basement, and i love it for the most part, it doesnt sound that bad (since its all unfinished i dont usually have issues with flat parallel walls and such), it has an atmosphere that i like, and its a pretty good size. The only problem is that there's water...

    Evolution of Studio Acoustics

Forgive me if my idea of all this is inaccurate, i'll admit I don't know much about this topic, but it seems to me that the acoustics of recording studios have changed a lot in the past 50 years. I see old pictures of studios and a lot of them seem to be these massive rooms that look like...

    Best nearfields for under $400???

I hope this is an ok place to post this, i wasnt sure... Anyways, I'm looking for some active nearfield monitors for $400 and under (if you can really, really convince me that an amazingly better valued monitor is just a little more i might go for it). I've been looking at the M-Audio BX8's, but...

just recorded song with just vocals and guitars

So yesterday was recording day for my musical project (i dont call it a band because its not... just me and my best friend writing, then getting other musicians to help us play what we wrote). We recorded a song that was my lead vocals, two hard panned classical guitars, two stereo tracks of 4...

    The Wall Of Sound

Everyone always seems to come to a point when they want a massive wall of sound for some reason or another. Everyone also knows that getting that sound is really hard, especially with home recording equipment. What are everyone's techniques for acheiving the famous wall of sound? I've heard...

Applying effects with ADATs, please help!

okay, this might seem like the dumbest question in the world, considering i've had my XT20 for awhile... but how do you add effects and such after the material is recorded? Up until now i've been sending the track out of the adat to the mixer (with the effect chain in the i/o of the channel) and...

    Recording drums is hard (damnit)

the last two days i've finally had a drum set in my studio to tinker with recording...wow it is so hard to get a decent sound... jesus christ. I'm using the classic three mic set up, although i could put a 57 on the snare if i wanted. The drums just sound so weak and distant. I'm forced using a...

    classical guitar strings

I just bought a set of D'addario classical guitar strings, my friend who sold them to me at my local music shop told me they were the highest quality strings available. I've always used elixirs, but he didnt have any. I took them home, put them on my guitar, and so far i absolutely hate them...

    bright cymbals vs. dark cymbals

just wondering what everyone's preference is, and if that preference is different for recording. personally i prefer dark cymbals like k customs but i'd imagine (i dont really know) that brighter cymbals would be better for recording because theyd cut through the mix better...??
