44.1 vs 48kHz: Restarting the flamewar...

I had a revelation a couple of days ago. I got a theory why recording in 48kHz and the downsampling to 44.1 might actually be better. One reason was mentioned before, that the resolution is higher so that digital effects, primarily reverbs, could work at a higher quality. But that difference is...

Why is the MPC3000 so expensive?

Anybody know? The MPC2000 seems to have more features, and the MPC2000XL even more, but the MPC3000 still is like three times as expensive!!! It's very strange...

    Amps

I'm thinking of buyin an amp. It will probably only be used for recording, so it doens't have to be big, just sound good. Basic guitar amp with a nice distortion. The budget is a couple of 100 bucks I guess. Probably no more that $500. I have no problems with buying second hand. Where should I...

    Bias level question.

I calibrated my Fostex A-8LR 8-track yesterday, and I did what Quantegy recommended for the 456 tape, and used a 3.0 db overbias at 10kHz. But this actually lowers the frequency response at 10kHz to about -2db, as compared with 1 kHz. Hummm... My gut reaction here is to set the bias so that the...

MP3 Encoder shootout: Help!!! Need test material!

I'm having trouble finding material that will show a quality difference in 128K encoding. So far I have only found one, which is a song called "Lidocaine & aspirins" by "Melanies". It's a straight and pretty normal rock-song, but with excellent production. I found the song on a reference CD in...

    Which MP3 encoder?

I thought I should upload my things to mp3.com, but they refuse anything else than 128kbps as ecoding speed, and the encoder (or rather the front-end, I think) I have used so far in it's freeware version does not allow this. I have recognized that several encoders sound like crap. I think...

    Earthworks SR69, whaddayousay?

I saw a review of this mic in a Swedish magazine. The verdict is "almost too accurate" and it's listed as costing around $350... So, OK, I'm drooling. :) What do you say guys? Anybody used this, whats your verdict? I'm definitely thinking about getting one of these. I like accuracy, as a...

All Points Bulletin: Looking for this weird and wonderful bass!!!

Once upon a time, when I was poor, I saw the coolest bass I have ever seen. I've always had a soft spot for unusual things, and this bass was kinda special: 1. I was 8-stringed (you know, like a twelve-string guitar, but a bass!) 2. It had an "automatic damper", i e a rubber pad you could raise...

    "Ultimate" mastering processor: Nord Modular!!

Well, OK, it doesn't have digital ins and outs. Thats the drawback. And the input are 16b/48k, although the internal processing is 24b/96k. So maybe it doesn't cut it for professional mastering. But for me? Perfect! I found this 3-band stereo compressor patch, which works as a charm! And the way...

    Fostex A-8 equalization standard.

Can anyone confirm that the Fostex A-8 ises the IEC1 equalization standard? I have info that says that all they 1/2" 8-tracks do, but the A-8 is 1/4", so I'd like it confirmed...

All Points Bulletin: Looking for sequencer!

I want a sequencer, but I'm a weird person, with weird demands! :) This is the features I'm looking for: - Windows software OR dedicated hardware. - Pattern based. - Sync to MTC (or in the hardware case, smart tape sync, like SMPTE, is OK.) - Be able to turn on and off patterns / channels...

Recording and playback levels on a A-8 reel-to-reel

When I record on my A-8 with the VU's bobbing around jus below the red, during playback the VU's will hit the roof. According to my VU's, the playback levels are WAY higher than the recording levels. Is this normal, or is my A-8 weirdly trimmed? I'm using Quentegy 457 tape, btw.

De-essers: I need details of funktionality!

I löööv my Nord Modular. It has analog inputs you know, and great modules like vocoders and compressors and filters and wave transformers and loads of nice little other stuff that you can fiddle around with! So when I needed a de-esser I realized I would be able to built one in the modular! But...

    The final judgement coming up...

I think this is a cool idea, and I'm gonna listen to what you other guys do during the weekend. Please check out my demos on: http://www.regebro.nu/lennart/music.html It's not the full songs, so downloading time is not that long... I think (and my friends say so to) that the songs are really...

Syncing MIDI clock devices to tape?

Currently I have two things that can sync to tape, an TR-909 drum machine, and an external midi-port that has SMPTE sync. The SMPTE sync seems to work like a charm, but I think it outputs MTC, and I have no devices that understand that. They are all cheap thingies that only can sync to MIDI...

    What monitors to get?

I need new monitors. What should I get? I'm on a pretty tight budget and I don't think I'll be able to put out more then $500-$800 on this if I'm going to get them this year. :( If I have any preferences it's towards active monitors, just because I think matching the amp and speakers is a Good...

Difference between Quantegy 456 and 457 tapes?

I recently bought a Fostex A-8. Everybody seems to think that Quantegy Tapes are the best, but the votes go equally between the 456 and 457 tapes. What should I use for the Fostex? Whats the difference?

Give me the low-down on the Fostex A-8LR!

I just got me a second hand Fostex A-8LR 1/4" 8-track. Seems to be working. And it's the version that record all 8-tracks simoultaneously too, which is nice. Now, I feel that I need more info on this little baby! Whats the difference between the A-8 and A-8LR? Whats the difference between the...
