    Reverb for blend and size

"I rarely follow 'rules', most of mine come from being wrong and fixing it. " Exactly. I learned a lot of things from trying something and then realizing it was wrong, or didn't fit. As far as reverb and delay, I always have a delay, which is a ping-pong set so it's "bounce" is just barely...

balancing the vocals: compression / waves vocal rider / manual automation on particularly loud words or phrases

"Manual automation on particularly loud peaks." There you go. Determine where they are, and use automation. It can be tedious, sure, but well worth it. You have to be careful, but you'll get used to it. As you yourself pointed out, you did it and it worked. Every vocalist is different, and...

    Feedback for Editing Voice Over?

Can't access the clip. You converted a closet into a vocal space--is that what you mean?

    Vocal comping

I'd always prefer that the singer re-do whole sections, rather than a word or two, but if they want to do it like that, then we do it. If it's me singing, I always re-do the whole section, to keep it sounding natural. That's just me though. As far as de-essing, well, I think everyone is...

Me? I write and record music, and record other people doing so. Pop and rock and folkie stuff.

Novice Solving Issues with backgroud hiss

Cheap Behringer stuff was all I had at first . . . . I didn't mean to recommend the Focusrite above; it came to mind immediately, but a guy I make music with just bought an Ipad with Garageband, and he did some shopping for an interface, and at first wanted the 2i2, but later settled on the...

    Learning the Art

You may have come to the right place, and it's certainly going to be cheaper than the LA film school, though I'll bet they have some awesome hardware.

Novice Solving Issues with backgroud hiss

I'll cut to the chase here: Get an interface, something designed to send in signals from mics and line signals, as well as give you the ability to monitor what you're doing. Something like the Focusrite 2i2, for instance. There are resources here that can show/explain how to properly mic up an...

Novice Solving Issues with backgroud hiss

I only hear hiss at the very end . . . what I do hear in spades is a horribly distorted guitar. So, you're running two mics, recording an acoustic and singing at the same time? The guitar into the dynamic, and voice into the USB mic? You have no interface, is that correct?

    Limiter/Compressor WHILE Recording?

Outside of compressing the bass guitar on the way in, everything goes in dry with me. I've never had a vocalist who seemed to need it going in (myself included) but I do use it once it's in the box. I can't imagine using a limiter on a vocal going in. I know from reading about the subject that...

Building Music studio at home !!

I love mixers--twiddling knobs, pushing faders up and down, etc. I use it almost exclusively for monitoring, but with the RayDat interface I could use it as the input source, and for mixdown. But I don't. The virtual mixer in the DAW is easier, quicker, and far more versitile. Of course. The...

Guitar sounds harsh and tinny recorded

Yep. It's often surprising to me, still, how sometimes you really have attenuate certain frequencies. If you're massively compressing, you're doing something wrong. The real Godsend in digital is volume and pan automation.

Guitar sounds harsh and tinny recorded

Well, you can. Once I have the guitar recorded it goes through one of Slate's Virtual Mix Rack pre-amp emulations, usually the "Trident," and then it hits the EQ, then the compressor, everything in the VMR. I don't usually compress distorted guitars, but they certainly get EQ. I put the EQ...

Guitar sounds harsh and tinny recorded

No. The guitar sim--like, say, a Line 6 Pod--it's output goes into the Focusrite. Since the guitar sim has already jacked up the gain, go right into the one of the combi jacks on the Focusrite. I don't know which one you have--I have an 18i20, and it has 2 inputs on the front that are designed...

questions about setting up signal chain for recording at home

If this recording thing is something that's important to you, and you want to do it forever, this is what I think you should do, because I do it, and it works great and is simple to set up (hopefully I won't confuse myself and you): Treat the room. Get an out-board reverb unit and set it up in...
