In-ear monitor vs headphones vs stage monitor

Yes, I've dropped any serious thoughts of IEM. But the 'problem' that prompted these thoughts remains. I feel I can sing pretty well without a mic. But put a mic in the mix and I'm close to having my adoring fans start to throw food. (Of course this wouldn't happen.) I am trying to find a way to...

I've moved this last question to its own string. Thanks for all the input.

    Basics of setting monitor mix

I started going to a local Open Mic for the last few weeks. I was starting to feel better with using the stage monitors. That was until last night. A major disappointment. Several things happened but the biggest issue remains me getting the mix set and allow me to relax and focus on just...

Thanks for all the great input and teachings. I've been going to a local Open Mic for the last few weeks. I was starting to feel better with using the stage monitors. That was until last night. Movie on Vocal Technique

It was like a 80-90's vintage film. Other than my original description I can't think of anything else.

    Movie on Vocal Technique

This is pretty close but way too new. The one I'm thinking about was based in the US. I can't believe there are so many movies that are so similar. Thanks!!

    Mixer set-up basics - newbie

This does help. I had understood that the mic gain was a set it and forget. And it makes the most sense if the channel volume and/or master volume are set to zero because, as you said, the gain and the volume are independent. I am curious why the channel 1 gain LED is located next to the Pan...

This is not the film I am thinking of. Amazing how many films there are on similar topics. Thanks!

    Movie on Vocal Technique

VHS, I would not blame you. :) I don't recall it was a academy-award-winning level film. I just remember how the focus was on the ugly front-end work of technique and, only then, did the student get to realize the reward which was a beautiful voice.

    Movie on Vocal Technique

I was not familiar with 'A Star Is Born' so I looked it up. There are some similar bits in the plot but I don't believe it is the one. The one I'm thinking of is more focused on the alcoholic coaching a raw talent into be a potential star. The plot is more about the vocal teachings. And I don't...

    Movie on Vocal Technique

Ok. so this may get whacked but I figured I'd give it a shot. Years ago, I recall watching a film, a drama, that was centered around a young woman who, as I recall, was in a bar band. A vocal instructor, while out drinking, saw the band , saw potential in her and, somehow, got her to take vocal...

    Newbie on steriods

I settled on a Scarlett Solo so I don't think I can bring my stereo mp3 source (small player not a phone) into the system as a stereo signal. The input available is a 1/4 jack for instruments. What confused me is why have a head phone jack when there is no way to get stereo into the device...

Not relevant to the topic so I ignored it.

Some days the vocal cords just don't work.

Vocal folds need to be flexible to sing high. Do exercises in the falsetto and falsetto 2 ranges. Search for Justin Stoney online. He has any number of free vids to help improve your highs. Like stretching any muscle, stretching the vocal folds takes time and being consistent with the technique...

    Newbie on steriods

Thanks for the response. At this point I mostly trying to learn and understand at a level I've never considered in the past. Bottom line is I'm just trying to improve my vocals purely to just improve - no other real goal. Singing is one of my retirement hobbies and like with most things of this...

    Newbie on steriods

As expected the more I learn the more questions I have. I have learned, referring to my thread on using EIM at an Open Mic, that the sound guy at the place I'd most like go for Open Mic can deal with a EIM transmitter which would forgo the need to have my own mixer on stage, etc. Bottom line is...

In-ear monitor vs headphones vs stage monitor

My learning continues. I'm beginning to understand more about the auxiliary bus/outs, etc. Some great on-line tutorials. I am thinking the mixer below may work having a USB interconnect plus the auxiliary bus. Comments? It is about the same price as the one above. It has better EQ but no...

In-ear monitor vs headphones vs stage monitor

Reading and doing more research, it seems the mixer pictured will help me achieve at least one of my equipment upgrade goals - it has USB out so I can record and play-back via a computer. This is without consideration for IEMs - but that may be a next step. I'd really like to get good enough...

In-ear monitor vs headphones vs stage monitor

Thanks. I didn't think feedback was the right word but then 'mix' didn't jump at me either. Makes sense, however. I do want to hear both my voice and the backing track. Would be lost otherwise.

In-ear monitor vs headphones vs stage monitor

With regard to bone conduction and using stage monitors versus IEM, while I've never attended a recording session the videos and pictures I see of them typically show the vocalist using head phones. I would think this is for the same reason I was interested in using IEM is for purposes of...
