    When did .....?

While this is partly true, the problem was bypassed in earlier mono and then stereo records by use of eq and filters along with the RIAA curve and arrangements that pushed both bass guitar and bass drum higher in the spectrum along with arrangements that made use of the higher tones available...

    When did .....?

Well I don't know exactly, but it would likely have come after they were mixing/mastering on boards designed with pan controls. The first final "stereo"mix/mastering control setups that I have seen pics of had simple switches for Left, Center, Right. The center would send equal output to the...

    What is a producer ?

My understanding is that the term's definition, like many words in English/American English, has evolved over time along with how we create music. The original "music producer" was the guy (it was a sexist era) who ran the radio show on which the artists appeared. He would be presented with an...

    Mixing trade offs

Hi. I think the most obviously correct answer is: it depends. Mostly on the arrangement, but also on the genre, etc. The most important thing to remember is that even though we call reverb an effect, when mixing it is an additional sound source, thus it will take up space in the sound field ...

    Focusrite Scarlett 2i2/4i4

Yes, you can listen to both at the same time. During recording I normally turn the fader for the track that is record armed all the way down since this controls the output level and prevents having to listen to the direct sound and the delayed sound from the DAW channel that is armed

    Are you totally awesome?

I am better than a slap in the belly with a wet fish. However, I am more cool than awesome.

Do stacked plugins with their mix knobs set to zero impact the sound?

There are digital signal processors. They have A/D and D/A. Audio goes in, gets digitized, effected, coverted to analog and comes back out. That is not how DAWs work. A recorded file is purely digital in a DAW. Nothing will change that digital representation unless the software instructs it to.

Do stacked plugins with their mix knobs set to zero impact the sound?

Um, a plugin is not an audio path, so, expanding on Steve's comment, it depends on the code of each plugin. In essence a plugin is an instruction set to perform numerical operations on a digital representation of audio, no actual audio is involved. Therefore if the plugin design is such that...

For instrumentalists only: Is your Style Unique ?

I have plenty of older recordings which, while I recognize my playing, I can not for the life of me remember how I played them. My "style"? of playing has evolved constantly over time, however, others, especially non musicians, have said they can tell when it's my playing. I don't even know if...

Compression on drums from programs like Addictive drums and EZ drummer?

Parallel compression can be awesome to add punch, as well as parallel saturation. Samples don't generally "need" compression but volume leveling is not the only use for compression as in it can be used to push stuff up or down, front or back compared to other stuff. And of course it can be used...

    Capo

Because most guitars don't have a "zero" fret, a capo on an acoustic actually changes the tone dramatically. I really like capo'ing at the 3rd fret and when you finger an open "E" it's about the best sounding "G" to me. Also, my Taylor sounds like crap when mic'd up EXCEPT when capo'ed. I...

    I think I need a patch bay

TT is "TIny Telephone" and as has been mentioned, they are really only necessary when you are trying to fit a LOT of patches into a small space. I run two plain jane 1/4" TRS patch bays for two separate mixers, various synths, a couple of interfaces. three computers, four outboard processors, It...

What's your favourite1970's studio analogue Production?

Breakfast in America is really well recorded but I don't care for the songs either. We used to sing "take the Wrong way home" when it came on the radio whilst driving around half stoned. I like both Crisis, What Crisis? and Even in The Quietest Moments. Genesis was mostly too compressed on...

    analog emulation plug-ins, worth it?

Pretty much all of these are adding saturation and/or harmonics to emulate the naturally occurring changes that happen to audio signals that are sent through transformers and other circuitry. Since it's essentially distortion they are actually doing something to your pristine digital audio...

    Multiple USB interfaces?

Yes, in most cases your interface limit is your track limit however there are dedicated systems that use a "Master" interface and "input" modules and often even different mfg hardware can be used in this fashion if they can speak the same "lingo".
