The Perception has an average bright chinese capsule no different from any mic in this price range. There is a much better mic here : http://pmiaudio.com/product/cs-1000/ on sale. This is a step above the average Chinese capsuled mic IMHO.

I have used a 57 and found for me that it works best very close to the fretboard, like 3-6 inches close and pretty close to the center of the fretboard around the 5th fret. I know it's different from using a condenser but that is what works for me.

Electronic drums sound best through an amp designed for keyboards. Vocals usually sound best through bass amps. I don't know why, they just do. The idea of recording amped anything is to get a "live" feel from the sound. Works good.

You haven't mentioned it yet so maybe you are already are doing "dynamic" balancing. If you don't already know, dynamic balancing is using automation to feature different parts at different parts of a song. Volume, pan, eq, and compression changes to highlight different things using automation

Also if you lower your monitor level you will find yourself turning stuff down less often and usually ending up with a better track balance IME

Define "better" and "good" please. Popular is almost always dumb lyrics and simple chord sequences. It appeals to the common denominator. You and I may have completely different views of what constitutes good and poor. So subjective a question makes me hesitant to even think about a response
