I still spin the old black records - anyone else?

There is something mysterious and captivating about a disk rotating on a platter, with a needle picking up a huge range of frequencies hidden in a groove direct mechanical action and friction amplified into music. Forcing us to participate in the care and maintanence of the disk and storing it...

Buying Guitars Mail-order or On-line, do ya?

Guitarits, Bass players, and other instuments too, what do you all think of purchasing from the catalog, mail-order, interent, etc. sources? I was always weary of this since it's such a feel thing, I thought I kind of need to be there to try it out, but lately, I've heard of a lot more people...

MR-8 and stuff I got for it vs. my new all-in-one DAW

I got the MR-8 $300 then I got a preamp, ~$100, patchbay $50, (to patch in effects and eq) EQ $150, another pre $100, compressor $250. cables ~$50? Of course I got a lot of other stuff, but just for using the MR-8 I got most of this stuff and if I had my current DAW, most of it would be in it...

Reverb Help - sounds like large high school bathroom

I hear some really nice reverbs on stuff, not sure how much of it I need lately mixes sound pretty dry on modern stuff, but my 'room' presets sound like a large bathroom.

Your first tube mic, how did it feel?

Well, I just finally got one. And I don't know what I'm doing with it. It seems darker, than my ss condensers, but I don't want any of my new mics to sound like any of my old mics, that would be useless....

I'm thinking that drum mic'ing could get really expense really fast using a mic/drum

you have 5 drums and 3 cymbals. 8 mics, maybe more but for stereo toms, that's 3 mics, (3 tracks) and for stereo cymbals either 2 overheads or mics on cymbals, or both! (8 tracks or more). Then let's talk preamps and compressors. 8 channels of pre amp is expensive if you don't wanna, or don't...

Ok, so what's the scoop on the MXL 960? b/c on sale @ MF, I can finally afford it.

MXL 960 is a tube condenser mic LDC cardioid. I was sooo close to getting a v77, then fip, they're gone. Is a low cost tube mic worth it at all or will it not really provide the true tube mic experience? Or is it too new to know yet?

Anyone think I should bother to try to isolate drum mic's for zero leakage from Kik?

Has anyone gotten to do this well? I mean perfectly? I am considering taking my crappy kik playing and replacing it w/ a machine, but leaving the rest of the kit. The only way to actually play the whole kit and replace the kik, would be to isolate w/ zero leakage, b/c w/ some real kik in...

Korg D1600mkii working well, therefore, I'm not posting as much.

I used to post a lot more, much in the Fostex forum. I've used the MR8 for about 2 years. I still use that, but not as much. The Korg is working for me and what's really cool is the burner in it can back up my projects and burn the audio cd and uses cdr and rw and I never have to interface w/...

Napster - the new legal one vs. itunes, etc. - any users???

itunes didn't support windows until recently, I guess Apple wants everyone to use Apple for music, not happening.... Napster, I see they have on demand listening and downloading, but you can't burn the tune until you buy it. That seems fair, since I would almost never care to burn a compressed...

I wanted to try an omni large cap so I got SP B3

and it's definitely a different way to go. I had a small cap, B5 and it was ok, but not for vocal at all. I didn't want another Berry mic, and the SP was cheap enough and I wanted to try something of theirs. I did a solo acoustic and vocal and it was really nice to be picking up in such a...

I just went to the Korg D1600mkii from my MR8 I've used for the past 2 years

This thing is nice. I used my MR8 more than any other multitrack I ever had. Over tha past 2 years, I recorded a lot, and it was because the unit is really easy to set up and record a new song and transfer to pc to archive and free up room on the chip. but over the years, i slowed down a bit...

vf-160 Users, I have some questions

how long does it take to burn a cd of your project for backup? looks like no usb or other interface, so it's cd only? what's that row of buttons above each fader? how do you adjust pan on a track, (since there's no obvious pot to turn)? it has 2 inserts, so where do they route to? can you...

A hypothetical Q: If I'm getting nice sounds w/ my cheap mics, do I bother upgrading?

In other words, ok, I have some experience w/ placements, and I know a little theory, I am basically in control of my mic'ing and getting pretty good results. Is there any real reason to satisfy my curiosity of the potential improvement in using a mic that is 8 times or 10 times the price of...

Another sound, very nice, Thanks to Harvey G.

Hey, Thanks Harvey, for that big mic thread. I just used the mxl 990 LDC at two feet, just outside the nearfield and wow, another sound. I really liked this one, very balanced and usable. Acoustic guitar 1. Try 2 tomorrow.... I'm almost thru that thread, I'll be going back. I'm gettin'...

    Shorten pedal chain? and rebound?

I'm having a hard time adjusting my pedal, but it doesn't allow me to adjust the chain length. Are there any that can? It just feels like I'm travelling too far down than I'd like to. Also, what pedal adjustments could help lessen rebound ? - the kind you don't want - ghost notes in the wrong...

how the heck do i choose an electric guitar pickup? there's 75 kinds

of course i'm not going to test them. so if i don't hear them, but that's the ultimate goal, i'll be buying one and having to guess what it sounds like and then after installing it find out. and then there's different models of the same type and different prices for them and they use...
