    multitrack tape degradation

The shipping costs are crazy. I just sent 4 items to china - the box weighed in at 3.8Kg - the best price I could get (with £200 cover) was £49.50! It's really bad at the moment, having gone up nearly 50% in a year!

Anybody else bought a guitar for what it looks like?

Have you got a picture? Love to see it.

Anybody else bought a guitar for what it looks like?

In another topic we were looking at Chibsons so I dug this one out as I really like what it looks like? Plays OK too!

Another great choice Jimmy - keep them coming.

    multitrack tape degradation

First rule of reel to reels. Buy isopropyl alcohol in a big container, plenty of cotton buds and lint free cloths and a demagnetiser. The heads and some other parts in the tape path get magnetised every time the tape passes through. HF response suffers and worse, magnetised parts partially erase...

    multitrack tape degradation

well, back then I never even thought about tape in this way. I went to great lengths not to mechanically crunch it. Brakes often got out of adjustment so hitting play while rewinding near the end when the spools were going fast was a bit risky when it snatched, but I never ever worried about...

Mid-side decoding issue - Total silence from the two side tracks

The best way to describe m/s is a matrixed two channel source. Multiplex stereo is indeed the mono channel, with the second channel the left/right information on the subcarrier.

Mid-side decoding issue - Total silence from the two side tracks

Looked at it with some proper tools and it is simply too much side and not enough mid, so small movements of the speaker have much bigger swings from centre. Reducing side and boosting mid seems to fix it. Maybe the close distance enhanced the left/right shifts. putting the two versions above...

Mid-side decoding issue - Total silence from the two side tracks

Absolutely NOT an effect. A stereo technique with precise spacial location that has absolute mono capability, but with the ability to vary the width afterwards. I use it for choirs and small ensembles in locations where you cannot get a space with speakers. So many times, before M/S I would...

Mid-side decoding issue - Total silence from the two side tracks

Hmmm. With my eyes closed, iems in, my brain told me there was left to right movement, but it settled almost central. I have never heard this before. Its really interesting.

Mid-side decoding issue - Total silence from the two side tracks

Something strange is happening. I put my in ears in and the track porterhouse posted above gives me a central image but sounds a little odd, then as he moves left, I hear a shift which quickly goes back to centre-ish. Then, as he goes right, i get a movement but that too resolves back to middle...

    Mona (realism question)

I tried to actually play it from the MIDI file he sent, and the timings and octave jumps happen at place my brain struggled with. I would have to seriously practice to be able to play it - there aren't huge numbers of different notes, but the order they play in doesn't work in my brain. If you...

    Bought a 'damaged' Tele

£500 seems a really decent price for a new tele! The epoxy will stop it chipping further and you could always refinish it some time in the future.

Mid-side decoding issue - Total silence from the two side tracks

That's a great idea - look forward to it. Maybe we could do the reverse and post an m/s pair of files for you to try on your system?

    New gear and problems

Thats the trouble with old gear. They have faults and you have to live with work arounds. A bit of a bummer though if you ever need to use it on a stereo source, but you can fudge the level issue on one channel easily enough.

distortions in my audactity recordings on my laptop

If this is the type of stuff you normally record, then why are you even using EQAPO? I’m not knocking free DAW software and plugins, but Audacity has EQ supplied with it. You clearly have not got to grips with your interface settings and levels in the DAW. Rich is totally right here. Adjust the...

"May Angels Guide" - technology check

I liked it - and all those vocal tricks worked fine for me. I really hate it when people sort of apologise for MIDI, as if it's some kind of evil. I don't really care if any sound is played by any device, if it is done well. I heard one thing I didn't like and that's just the end vocals where...

Sony cassette recorder and microphone attachment with out pre amp

Loads of us started with a cassette recorder and one mic - I remember my first Sony and Shure microphone - a 545 in my case. I got some cracking recordings and surprised myself. You learn loads by just trying things.

I tried to treat my very small home studio; I’m now looking for advice to make it better as I think I’ve over done it.

He joined, complained that other forums gave him advice he didn't follow. We then said the same thing, and he never came back.

    Mona (realism question)

I'm not sure the rattly rickenbacker-ish bass sound works. I'm also hearing little playing dynamics. Tell you what. If you send me the Midi file (or if it's cubase, the cpr file) I will have a look and see if I can spot what makes it stand out a bit - and maybe generate some different versions...
