ONE of the hardest things for me to learn how to do, as far as mixing goes (i've been doing this since the mid 80's) is to find the frequencies that cause masking. you can use Spectrum meters (most all DAWs have this) and you can isolate tracks, use parametric EQ's, dynamic EQ's, multiband...

try saturation. with the right plug, you can automate it, to bring up the saturation during just the lower sections, or just break the track out and apply it where it's appropriate. i use Waves Magma BB Tubes plug for this purpose.

kinda proggy, i just mixed this version using the new waves curves equator plug, quite cool effect.

very tasty. nice tone on that acoustic. it'd be nice to hear a key change during the long first solo section, so the walking bass line has a chance to change the mood.

I gave up on my roland VS 1880 back around 2008, moved to a pc setup with Sonar, have never looked back.

another new test mix, i want this one spacy, but not too spacy... drums dry, but with a bit of room character. this is the 1st of a couple of passes at final mix. want to make sure the bass sits ok.
