    Tascam 388 Story...

Thanks Corey! I was hoping I could do it like that. I went back to your first images of this thread and although it wasn’t specific to that removal, I saw a few things that led me to believe what you say. I hope that the cable is long enough to be able to safely work with it and I’ll update you...

    Tascam M520 Story...

Had you not assigned the drum channels to the 1 & 2 busses? maybe? regardless, glad you got it working!

    Tascam 388 Story...

Just curious, I have my 388 in storage but was thinking of putting it up for sale. When I bought it, channel 7 VU “glass” was broken but light and meter still work. I came across a working bank of 5-8 VU meters, plug and play for the 388 and wondered how hard is it to replace the VUs? How much...

Using Roland SBX-80 Sync Box/SMPTE with MIDI sequencers and my MS-16 Recorder

Next question I can’t seem to find in the manual for the SBX-80: If you stripe a tape with SMPTE, does it have to be at a particular BPM? or do you set the BPM after you stripe a tape and everything sync’d to the machine follows it? Half the hurdle with tech or anything for that matter, IMHO, is...

Using Roland SBX-80 Sync Box/SMPTE with MIDI sequencers and my MS-16 Recorder

I just don’t know, honestly, I’m not intending to use this with a DAW, but using it only with hardware.

Using Roland SBX-80 Sync Box/SMPTE with MIDI sequencers and my MS-16 Recorder

So the guy accepted my “reasonable” offer for the NOS SBX-80. I guess time to download the manual (although I think he said it came with the original in the box) and figure out yet another bit of kit! Thanks for all the advice and information that helped me better understand this type of gear...

Using Roland SBX-80 Sync Box/SMPTE with MIDI sequencers and my MS-16 Recorder

Interesting you mention that, my MOTU 16A has Word Clock abilities. I’ve never used it before.

Using Roland SBX-80 Sync Box/SMPTE with MIDI sequencers and my MS-16 Recorder

Again, thanks, that expanded my understanding EVEN further and I think for my needs and the fact that I’m not interested in using DAW, I‘m actually using hardware sequencers like Roland MC-500 and Akai MPC One and my Kronos 2. The first SBX-80 I found is only $185 shipped, so I will likely go...

Using Roland SBX-80 Sync Box/SMPTE with MIDI sequencers and my MS-16 Recorder

Yes, thanks Corey! That clarifies so much!!! I may still get the sync box but I now see how this normally would be used. I think what I was wondering about is if my machine has a little speed lag that if I try to record a drum machine sequence, then want to come back and place another sequence...

Using Roland SBX-80 Sync Box/SMPTE with MIDI sequencers and my MS-16 Recorder

I have found a Roland SBX-80 that appears to be able to do the SMPTE striping on my tape machine, and uses MIDI for synchro. I guess the question is: should I be doing this or just lay down drums via sequencer and then layer each part manually on to the tape the old school way? I guess it’s all...

    Tascam M520 Story...

Nice! ? I probably won’t go that far yet, but it sure would have been nice if they had done this already… but then, for all the M-520 CAN do for such a low price… I hate to complain.

    Tascam M520 Story...

You are correct, not enough time working with it and my sessions are small, just me, occasionally one other person, not like back when i worked in the studio and we did full bands. Thanks

    Tascam M520 Story...

I may just do that on Channels 3 & 4 since I’ll never be using the Phono function and they stay on MIC setting. I won’t be mic‘ing drums, so no need for a ton of phantom. Good solution, I feel stupid that I just didn’t decide to do this and dedicate some to always on. Thanks!

    Tascam M520 Story...

That’s what I do, I bypass the built-in mic preamps when using my outboard preamps with or without phantom power BUT the M-520 actually has some pretty great sounding mic preamps and I love using them with dynamic mics for sure, but even with condenser mics… but that brings me back to what I...

    Tascam M520 Story...

My only complaint in using my M-520 recording with condenser mics that I don’t want to run through outboard preamps for phantom is that they put the damn 48V phantom switch on the back of the unit!! would have been so convenient to have a switch on the channel strip!! WHY? ugh. Other than that...

    My studio build

Yup, sorry guys, way too OCD to have that out in the open! Now, behind all that equipment, inside my console desk, accessed from under and behind, there is a mess of coiled and labeled cables that looks like a rats nest by the time I got everything installed. I velcro tie groups together and I...

    My studio build

It's actually been in here the whole time but i had to have it crammed into the corner and unusable! It's a K100 and sounds great. I re-capped it when i got it, no noise at all. I use it mainly as a bass amp. I really love it!

    My studio build

Yes, I'm very OCD and Virgo with my clean and organized approach BUT I was also trained at the studio I worked at in the early 90s as a junior engineer to keep it organized and put it away every time, same spot. "there's a place for everything and everything in it's place" as the boss always...

    My studio build

I love that little thing! After years of playing super loud AC15 and other tube amps, I got that for xmas from my lovely wife and got the message (ha ha). I was super suprised at how good it sounded at low volumes.
