I think you're pickup up too much of the soundhole with the AT. You should try moving it farther down the neck. Or maybe just point it more in that direction.

Me too. I've always wanted an ebony one though. Well, two actually. One fretted, one fretless.. I had a Squier with an 'ebanol' board once. I just couldn't get into it.

Perhaps this is just a cross-Atlantic difference in semantics, but I wouldn't call it a 'feeble' mic. Just not high output is all.

It seems like a relatively recent thing. Maybe it's just coincided with the proliferation of podcasters. Did the MXL require the same amount of gain as the SM7? What pre did you use on yours when you didn't like it?
