Well thanks for saying so. A retraction like that shows character. I should point out...again...I don't mix into a limiter. I said that I could use a limiter at some stage (I don't even do this, but just suggested it could be something to try) only temporarily and only to drive volume into the...

    Mixing SOS

Yeah I think so too. There's an improvement. I put it down to more methodical thinking, of the kind I rambled on about a few days ago.

    Mixing SOS

Well, yeah, like you know, if I type stuff and describe word by word things that are ultimately done quickly and intuitively, it reads as overthinking on paper I guess. People have written 500 page books on mixing. I wouldn't say they are overthinking. If you know what I mean. What were the...

    Mixing SOS

Here's this song I was mentioning. I see progress in the mixing. The version 1 mix sounds too crowded together, too woolly or boomy or muddy. The version 2 mix has more space, sounds tighter and sounds like an improvement, to me anyway. So the first mix was done 3 weeks ago or so and in that...

    Mixing SOS

Thanks man. It's just the ramblings of a guy who has had huge issues with working out mixing and it's a pretty detailed account of a lot of the stuff that I think has helped my mixing outlook. They aren't the words of an authority. Never claimed to be. They're the words of a beginner trying to...

    Mixing SOS

Ok man, so you're obviously seething because I wrote too many words. You easily could have looked at the walls of text and moved on with your day. But instead you decided to scan a few sections, misconstrue what I said multiple times and post some thinly veiled passive aggressive attack based on...

    Mixing SOS

Thanks Mike, but I have a feeling you didn't really read it all properly. Maybe you glanced over it. I can go through those points for ya... 3) I said I have read or heard that some people do this. That's what I said. Ever heard of 'yep' the guy from the Reaper Forums who made that awesome "Why...

    13. At this point there's still stuff I want to keep at the front of my mind. Reverb, compression - creative/ technical, panning, a sense of space, clashes, masking, sidechaining / dynamic eq/ automation possibilities to showcase cool parts of the song or to hide a part that needs to be in the...

    Mixing SOS

Continued... 8. So, I start with the foundation...the drums. This is the start of concerted mixing. I'm keeping a lot of things in mind here...I'm thinking of the style of music, the genre, the feel, the message of the song. All of that stuff. I'm keeping in the back of my mind stuff like...

    Mixing SOS

Continued... 1. Track stuff so it peaks around -12db digital scale in your DAW. You don't have to be a stickler here. It's just a pretty good rule. 2. Once all your tracks are recorded, gain stage all of them. If you've recorded well, they should be reasonably close. Use a meter...a VU plugin...

    Mixing SOS

Appreciate that man. That song was kind of one that came after all this thread where I really tried to make a good mix with all the advice. Still think the mix is a bit clunky. Will mix it again one day. I've made some ground in my understanding of mixing, I'll go into below... Appreciate that...

    Dodging Concrete

Thanks everyone. So, it's basically ok...vocals could be doubled (I think they are doubled for real) and add excitement...so maybe a bit more high end on the vocals. Drop the kick and bring up the bass a bit. I can do those things pretty much no worries I think. Thanks for all the advice. (By...

    Always There

I'm caught in a trap...and I can't walk out... :) Nice one. Intro and that repeated section remind me of the great old song Suspicious Minds by the King. As usual, fine guitar work here.

General tips on how you improved the most at producing, overall?

If you mean mixing...I dunno, I've been tinkering with recording and mixing my own stuff for over a decade. It's only in the last year that I truly appreciated the very large deficiencies in my entire process. I haven't made any breakthroughs or seen the light or anything, or produced nice mixes...

Gloria - Thoughts on this mix

The sound is pretty charming. It sounds kind of lofi. The playing sounds like piano is not the dude's main instrument. But that's ok...simple, honest stuff has a charm of its own. It's atmospheric. I'd say if it just flowed a little better it'd be, well, better. But good effort. The school yard...

    Another song with lyrics

Man, I don't know what you're doing or not doing but you're doing good. You take away a little low mid from that vocal and seat it in with the track and you're there. The instruments and mix of them is real nice I reckon.
