    remote recording question

You can do it. Export the backing track to a wave file and send them that. Then they can put it in their daw and lay down the vocal and send it back to you. By default, the information on the SD card is proprietary to tascam. It is useless without the machine. That is why you need to export the...

To Plek, or Not to Plek? That Is My Question

That hospital did charge enough to pay off the cost on the DaVinci machine over 5 years. Otherwise, they wouldn't have bought it. Return On Investment is not just profit. If a Plek machine fret job costs more than a skilled luthier, the luthier should be charging more than they do. The...

To Plek, or Not to Plek? That Is My Question

Should the customer pay more, maybe not. But to get a reasonable ROI on the machine, that's what has to happen to not lose money on the machine. firefighters and paramedics should make more money than football players, but they don't because they don't generate as much revenue as football, so...

To Plek, or Not to Plek? That Is My Question

That would make sense AFTER the machine made back the $250k investment.

Newby question about Playing tracks recorded on 8 track on 2 or 4 track reel to reels

That sounds like something to do with the capstan roller, but it's been 25 years since I worked with one of those.

Help routing soundcraft 600 16 channel 8 bus

I don't think it has an instrument input, it has a line input on the channel. Plug something in and see what happens. You won't hurt anything. That would be faster than me downloading the user manual and getting back to the forum. Here is the thing that it sometimes takes a long time to wrap...

Help routing soundcraft 600 16 channel 8 bus

Why wouldn't you just use the tape inputs and outputs on the soundcraft? Plug the output channels of the recorder into the tape inputs and use the line switch on the channel to toggle between the mic input and the tape return.

Mixing: how long before your ears start lying to you?

I would mix for about 45 minutes, then take a 15 minute break, get up and walk around. Then get back at it. I could do that all day.

    Eq confused

An octave is a doubling or halving of frequency. An octave up from 100hz is 200hz. And octave down from 100hz is 50hz.

adjusting levels of other musicians in your headphones

Also, the drummer can turn his headphones down to the point that he can hear his drums naturally. I used to do that all the time. The only thing in my headphone mix that was kind if loud was the click.

    Eq confused

I'm not sure what you don't understand. A shelf is just that. A shelf. If you set the frequency of a high shelf at 1k and cut by 10db, everything 1k and above will be cut by 10db. If you set the frequency of a low shelf at 1k and cut by 10db, everything below 1k will be cut by 10db. That is...

A high shelf will boost (or cut) everything above the corner frequency (the one you choose) by the amount you set. A low shelf will boost (or cut) everything below the corner frequency by the amount you set.

Gain staging ok but main bus clipping??

With floating point math, there is no such thing as clipping the master. The only thing you could clip is the converter on the way out to your speakers, or exporting to a fixed bit file. Having the master set at unity serves no practical purpose, and simply turning it down makes much more...

Gain staging ok but main bus clipping??

You can also just turn down the master if you want to keep the other faders around unity. Since every daw is floating point, nothing actually clips until the converters. You can simply turn down the master to keep it from clipping.
